Default Change Cam or Ported 5.3 heads

Working on my buddy's ta, putting a new t56 in it. Heres the detail
ws6
full exhaust
ls6 intake
comp 212 218 115 old man cam
430 gears

He wanted to change the cam and would need springs, something like 230 236 112 cam. I told him with the stock 241 heads they are hurting performance. I Suggest keep the cam and springs which are not that old. Get some 5.3 heads and send them to LLoyd Elliot and mill them to 58-60cc. I said around 40hp from the ported heads cause of compression upgrade to around 11.2ish I think and the port work. VS a cam that will give him 10-20hp. The Heads will cost 600 to port and 100-200 for good cores. a cam kit 700ish.

What is yalls opinion.
Thanks

I love that cam, go for the heads and if that isn't enough stick a bigger stick in there. Literally everyone else will say go bigger but in the end it's up to you

I have two of these cars, one has the old man cam you mentioned and the other has a 226/230 112+4. I drive the one with the baby cam a lot more often lol

The better heads with the smaller cam will be more fun to drive than the big cam small head combo.. like said above.

With the port work, see if what they charge to do a bowl blend and valve job too, there's considerable power there and isn't always included in the port job.

I would do the heads. And also try to find even a FAST 90 or 92 used and stick on there if you're looking to make a considerable difference with not a ton of money

I upgraded a 6.0L with the 5.3 heads and a small cam. It drives and runs great.

Do both. Summit Pro Ls Stage 1 Ghost cam or Stage 2 cam costs an extra $289. Much of that offset by the sale of the original cam.

With the 4.30 gears, I would want to upgrade both the cam and the heads at the same time as others mentioned. New set of lifters LS7 or aftermarket lifters if budget allows would be nice while into the motor.

The extra compression with the new ported 5.3 heads and 4.30 gears will help offset some of the effects of a bigger cam. Personally I'd talk with one of the cam gurus or Cam Motion /Summit etc and maybe consider a little less cam than a 230/236. Assuming the car owner likes the current 212/218 old man cam's driveablity.

Best of luck and success with the project

Yea I was thinking a 230/236 112 +2 or 3. Or just tick street heat stage 2
