My comment was with regards to a recent discussion where someone was saying "don't go bigger for boost because then you'll move away from stock stroke and it won't last very long!" As we all know, it's been proven for years that a 4" stroke (with the right block) will last just fine if it's setup correctly and that the gains of a boosted 427 for example with the 4" stroke over the boosted 370, 383, 388 and the like is certainly worth it if the budget allows and hardly a ticking time bomb.

In reality if an air pump moves more air then it is doing more work and will have more output.
So a 383 will gain. Period. How it gains is up to the combo though. It will make more torque due to the physics of it, and if anyone wants to say thats not important, then they only heard that from someone else or are a ricer. ;-)
Both are important. And both will "win races"

Torque will dictate how many pairs of spare underwear you need to bring with you and horsepower is the rate of having to change them.

The stock stroke guys like to tout these huge big dollar builds as being attainable and all that and what will always happen. A 383 MAY take less boost than a stock stroke setup, but with that less boost it can make more hp and tq also, so which is better? The Venn diagram for that outcome hasnt been drawn yet

Love the internet.
pulled a few pistons from my buddies turbo 408 just to look see. 3 years of abuse at 20+ psi. Skirts looked fine.
Runs 8.70’s. Not talking a daily driver here, but I didn’t see any issues.

Sounds like a properly built combo! Piston design has certainly come a long way.

Congratulations. I haven't been on in a while but saw that you got it all back together. It obviously runs fantastic by the video! And, you've convinced me to continue working on my L33 in my garage for my GTO

I have a brand new 408 in there now that I'm afraid to run hard and I think I'd feel better knowing I didn't dump as much cash in a little ol L33 that's capable of running more than enough for my goals

Have fun!

Stroke only gets concerning with RPM. But I wouldn't run a 6.0 block with big boost.

The boosted 5.3's obviously work as there are a ton of them out there to prove that. They are capable of tons of power, often more than what a lot of people need in a street car so they make sense for a lot of people's goals. What I don't understand is how people think 408's and 6.0's aren't capable. I've run a 408 daily with 100's of passes on nitrous until I screwed up and hurt a piston. A close friend finally pulled his 408 with a centri after several years in the 1100+ rwhp range through a high stalled auto and 9". Only reason he pulled it is because he couldn't add any more power without blowing head gaskets. He's still using that motor in another project of his.

I'm not saying one thing is better than another because if it fits your goals than it is the best for YOU. Personally I like cubic inches if it fits in the budget and I like as much compression as I can get away with for the setup and fuel choice.

Can a 5.3 beat a 6.7 in a race? Absolutely assuming it's a better matched combo, better and/or lighter chassis setup etc. All other things equal the larger cubic inch higher compression motor has the advantage. I also prefer to gain as many cubic inches as possible from bore rather than stroke, but adding stroke isn't really an issue either.

I just wanted to say.....went to the gym in the car tonight. Did a little touching up on the tune. Added some fuel (11.5 afr) and added some boost. I hit 14.6psi in third and the car NEVER pulled that hard. I mean it pulled HARD. I’m very impressed with it at this point. The most I would see with the 5.7 is 12 to 13 psi for a second. I don’t understand how it’s pulling this hard with not much more boost and being smaller engine. Maybe the 5.7 was hurt on that cylinder long ago and something else is wrong with the engine I didn’t see. Ima pull it all apart because I don’t see how that piston would knock missing the top ring land and no metal to be found anywhere. Guess it Broke into small pieces and blew out the exhaust. Maybe that would explain why the car only picked up 3mph from last strip run. Remember I had a broke v band on my crossover that was leaking bad and was dropping boost and it trapped 125 then. Fixed that. Added 3-4psi more and no exhaust leak and it only went 3mph faster. Hmmmm.

but anyways. I’m just excited because I didnt think it would be pulling so hard this soon.

Could also be in cooler temps now then when you last drove the car?

I put together some old clips I had of my old GTO with the only difference being compression. This was after I hurt a piston on the nitrous motor and decided to go with boost on the next setup, but sold the car before I ever put the procharger on it. Original setup was a 408 with 11.4 to 1 after I hurt the piston we rebuilt it with exactly the same top end, cam, exhaust, etc. except we used custom dished pistons to bring compression down to 9.5 to 1. Cam was 242/250 on a 114 ls1 +2 advance. Same cubic inches with just a fresh hone and dished pistons. In the video the high compression clip sounds like the idle is faster, but it actually is the same idle rpm.

nah, when I ran the car last it was cold. It was about 40 degrees that night. Last night was about 68. It’s warming up around here. Right now, 6:30 a.m., it’s 62f. I live down south.

the only thing I can say is it felt like a 75hp shot of nitrous was added in 3rd. Call me crazy, but I feel this engine is definitely stronger than the other.

and on your video. Yea the lower compression has a deeper tone. The higher has more pop to it. Funny how the cam sounds tamer with the low compression.

You’re probably right then other motor may have already been hurt. The converter change may contribute to it some as well. Glad you’re happy with it especially after the initial troubles. Hard work pays off.

You may be in a more efficient part of the island for the turbo....

You are probably right

and so are you

the converter definitely seems to work better, stalling 1000rpms more on the foot brake
and I think ddnspider is right about the sweet spot of the turbo.

That simply means you need to turn the boost up more

Thats my thoughts exactly.

heres another thing to consider. I can only control my timing up to 8 psi....once its past that it drops to a certain amount regardless of boost. Not good and not safe. I'm about to order a lingenfelter lnc2000 which has boost timing retard and launch control....so i'll kill two birds with one stone there. and the car will run better at the inbetween boost levels. Not sure why I keep putting off ordering it. One reason I think is the wife is sick of me working on the car and not spending time with her. i get that thing in and i'm gonna want to install/tune it and I really need to give it a rest. I still need to install my meth injection too. that ought to pick it up even more.

Just finished my meth kit install and finally got the fail-safes setup the way I wanted it. Getting my new turbo this weekend. Hoping to turn it up myself.

Im mostly doing it for some cushion since i'm a hyper piston and 10.5:1 CR. Don't plan on adding much if any timing, just turning the boost up.

Ive only been at 12 degrees at 10 psi. Planning on somewhere around 15 psi and see what it wants for timing but likely somewhere in the same range.
