Default Ls1 228r cam questions

I have a 04 gto and im tryin to get it back on the road and need insight. I was going to purchase heads but ultimately its not in my budget to do so . Instead im using my 241 heads and doing them over with upgraded trunnion kit and replacing whats needed with the cam swap. I went with a texas speed 228r cam kit 112 lsa and .660 dual vale springs. My question is this i purchased cosmetic. 045 head gaskets will there be clearance issues with these or should i be safe? I know there is a way to check and will have that done before its ran but just wanted to know if anyone has done it in the past ? Also going with ls7 lifters and a ported ls6 oil pump and threw in a ls7 clutch kit as well. I know i should be swapping the heads as well but like i said its not in the budget .

It should clear but to be honest you should ALWAYS check and since the heads will be off you have no excuse what so ever to not check.

Save your old head gaskets for doing the PTV checking and subtract .007 from your measurements to replicate the .045 gaskets

Can you swing about $500 for 243 heads? If so run those instead of the 241 heads. They are considerably better

Could you elaborate a little more on how to measure it .

You'll need playdoh or clay to put on top of the pistons

Since you have the heads off and old gaskets
Put the cam in and put an old head gasket on it and one of the heads on it and hand tighten a few of your old head bolts in the head. Install the rocker arms and pushrods on one cylinder and spin the engine over with a ratchet on the crank pulley a couple of revolutions. Pull the head and cut the play doh down the middle of the valve impression and measure how thick it is.

In this video they also show cleaning the head bolt holes which is really important to do on your LS. Needs to be done on all LS motors. To do this I take a old head bolt and slot it a few times with a die grinder long ways to make it look the same as a thread tap looks then I run it in and out of the holes several times then spray out with compressed air then I spray brake cleaner in the holes and spray them out again with compressed air

And remember once you get your measurements to subtract .007 because your new thinner headgaskets are .006-.008 thinner than the OE gasket.

Some say the OE gasket is .051, that's the general accepted measurement, but I've seen some say .053 so subtract .008 I guess to be on the safe side

I'm leaving work and don't have time to look it up but I believe the minimum clearance is .100 on the exhaust and .080 on the intake. hopefully someone will confirm if that's correct or not.

My 2 cents - you sound like you want heads. I would hold off on the cam swap until you can afford them (and injectors) and do it all at one time. I wouldn’t want to be pulling heads just to replace lifters and then pull the heads again in the near future for a head swap. There would be money wasted between fluids, gaskets and potentially tuning by pulling heads twice.

This time of year, if you don't have a well heated garage, be sure to leave your clay in the house overnight. I've made the mistake of just grabbing some from the engine building tool drawer and it being to hard (from being in a cold garage) and compressing the lifter a little and skewing the results. Also, wipe it with a TINY bit of oil so it doesn't stick to the valve or piston when you slice it, if you plan on picking it up to measure. If you plan on just measuring it with the depth end of a dial caliper while it's still on the piston, then you really only need to wipe a TINY bit of oil on the top of it so it doesn't stick to/get lifted by the valve.

You will probably need injectors with that cam alone. It has way more duration that stock.

As far as fuel injectors can you guys point me out some that just drop right in . They dont need to be crazy just need to handle the cam and a future head job. My plan is too get the car running and put heads on in a year or two most likely.

The Pontiac GTP 36# injectors on ebay are the least expensive. They run at 42# at LS1 pressure. Should be good to 500+ hp. Might need to upgrade the fuel pump as well.
