Thoughts/opinions
plans are to build the top end of my 02 lq4
home ported 317 heads milled .030
cometic head gasket .029 thickness
trackmax cam .585/.585 228/230 duration 112 degree
trunnion upgrade kit and valve springs recommended for the TF cam
First off there haven’t been a lot of builds promoted with the 317s. Are they that pour of a design? Flow numbers seem very respectable. As for the cometic head gasket, I was thinking the thinner gasket would increase my compression however I have read concerns regarding “quench”. Not to proud to say I don’t know enough to have an opinion on this. I am aware that the valve clearances would need to be checked and the corresponding push rod length ordered. Also read that people doing similar builds as this run into concerns of “shrouding the valves”. Not sure if that is the actual term.
Another point of concern is with the thinner head gasket and .030 mill. Will I have issues with intake alignment?
As stated in the thread I am looking for thoughts and opinions. Before I did all the research I thought I had a plan however now I am second guessing myself. In addition I am not interested in doing something that has been tried and failed. Therefore if you see something in my setup that will obviously not work let me know.
.029 is may be too thin a head gasket. I'm not sure but it might be ok with the dished pistons. With flat tops it seems the consensus is about .035 quench is ideal. Pistons are usually above deck by .006 or so.
Cam choice should work good, especially with some added compression.
