I agree though, taking it out the bottom is really slick, and you don't have to worry about banging it around or breaking anything. The first two times I did a swap, I did this procedure by myself, with no help guiding or aligning the k-memeber as I lowered the car.... try doing it from the top using a cherry picker by yourself. lol

I've done it from the bottom on a lift. It's a no brainer really. I had no write ups to go on, just kinda looked at everything and it was pretty obvious what needed to be done. Once you start wrenching you see it's not a big deal. Go for it. Taking it out from the top would suck compared to going from the bottom.

Is it hard with the heads still on? What's easier? Dropping in a shortblock and assembling the heads inside the car, or just throwing it in already assembled? Thanks for the help. Oh, you guys might want to PM that guy with your email address because I revived this thread...

When you pull the motor out from the top, do you take the transmission out with it? If you don't, do you have to brace or otherwise support it from the underside of the car?

Jerflash it is pretty easy, you just need to get your bellhousing and flywheel off. Also take off your crank pulley it helps to pull the motor straight out. Make sure you get the ground wires off the side of the block(by the engine mount). take the A/C unit and altenator off too. radiatior has to be out too. have fun.

no,the heads do not have to come off..i will be reinstalling them before i put my motor in. It will go in with no probelm, plus you can be sure that you correctly torque the heads down and in sequence without worrying about trying to get a torque wrench in the engine bay..i also will reinstall my pulley, first, but you can however you want.

I must be slow... took me and a friend the whole day to pull it from the bottom with air tools. I used a engine hoist and lifted the front with the STB. Rear tires have to be on ramps. I have 31" jackstands that are now holding up the car.
There is so much you have to disconnect.
The engine/trans/kmember rested on a HD funiture dolly and rolled out sideways.
I'm doing a new BMR kmember and struts so this made the most sense.

Take a look at this book "How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8S" by Will Handzel. He is the program manager for GM Performance Parts. Chapter 4 is dedicated to engine removal for F-bodies, Corvettes, and pick-ups. I got a copy from Cartec on the net. The F-bodiesand Corvettes both come out from the bottom. The process does not look to bad, although the lifts look expensive, especially if you are not going to do this on a weekly basis. Good luck
