Default Look what I found!

well, I found out what was wrong with my car.
(previous thread: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/190046-what-could-wrong.html)

It turns out that I had two broken valve springs (Crane duals).
the inside spring was broken on each one. They only had @ 10k miles on them.
I put a pic on my webshots page under "broken springs" if you care to see them.

...and I was "this" close to buying a set.

That's weird. I don't recall anyone breaking these things.

Great that you found the answer. I noticed in the other thread you removed valve covers and did a visual. I have dual springs ( ISKY-295D ) on my TR224, but of course without removing the locks etc. you don't know it's broke ( inner spring ). I've got 11K on mine, perhaps I should check ( I feel a loss of power compared to when it was new ).

Even though it's a crappy situation, it's very nice to hear the valves didn't drop.

Are the inner springs designed to be the "fuseable link"?

The inner spring is meant to help the primary spring at higher rpm's, but it's also a big help when the outer spring breaks.

Yeah, I'm very happy the valves didn't drop.
I guess that's the way they designed them?

When you first pulled the covers and stated the springs were not broke, was it because you hadn't taken off the locks and retainers?

In other words how did you finally figure it out?

that is correct, just glancing at them you couldn't really see the inner spring.
I finally figured it out because I was changing out the vavle springs to the Patriot gold's because I had heard they had more seat pressure than the Crane's and I had already had some valve float on the dyno @6300rpm's with the Crane's. So I didn't find out they were broken until I pulled the locks out of them and removed them. Hopefully the Patriots will work well with the new cam that's going in also

Has anyone had a newer Patriot gold spring let go? I don't recall hearing about any... ran some searches - didn't see any complaints.
