Default Mini Valve Spring Checker (Follow up)

Have any of you used one of these?
can go in a drill press or arbor press.
There are a few on the market.

If so, did it seem to read correct?
And how big are they?

I’ve got a small arbor press, but might be to small depending on the dimensions of the tester.

Just can’t afford a Rimac......

Ron

I have an old Goodson I've used for years...don't know exactly how accurate it is....I think it's pretty close. it's a good tool to check consistency across a set of springs.

Size...

Thanks! So if the length where the spring sits is 2” or so, it would work.

Here is my cute little arbor press.

Looks like it should work...I can measure it tomorrow, I'll let you know.

I use an adjustable table drill press. Set to whatever height measurement I need.

Thank you, I’d appreciate that.
Like you mentioned, not looking for dead on ***** accurate. But would like to make sure my springs are all close to the same. And compare to a couple other sets I have here.

I keep looking for a good old classic floor standing drill press. Not sure how I’ve managed all these years w/o one.

Thanks. Springs with retainers are also 2.5” tall free standing so that doesn’t work. My arbor press is just too small.

I suppose I could use my hydraulic press. Hardly a precision instrument.

Thanks again

You could use a vise with smooth jaws if you have that.

Of course Goodson doesn’t make that anymore.
Did dome further studying.
The Proform units have shitty reviews.
The speedway Motors has good reviews. So I think I’ll get one coming.
They actually suggest using a hyd press.
My nextdoor neighbor has a nice drill press.

Thanks for the info guys.

So got the Speedway Motors checker yesterday. $54, but $15 to ship. We get spoiled by that free shipping!

Set it up in my Horrible Fright hyd press and tested a couple springs.

First spring was the AFR that I’ve been running. 20k miles.

1.80” was 135 lbs (spec 155)
1.20 was right at 400 lbs (spec 425)

So tried a new PAC 1207x spring

1.80 was 155 lbs
1.150 was 435 lbs
These numbers are right at spec.

The tool not only works, it appears to be quite accurate.

Excellent. A guy does!

It's also always good when a guy gets back with an update on a thread...

I try to follow up with results, good or bad. I know how frustrating it is to end up at dead ends when looking for info.

I rechecked the AFR spring specs, and I was correct, they have lost 20+ lbs.

These PAC 1207x Springs are good to .700” lift. I think they will work fine at .610” lift. With the heavier valves and ultra heavy YT rockers, needs good springs.
