Engine ticking low- mid rpm So I have a freshly rebuilt ls1
new pistons/ rings
new rods
new bearings -mains- big end- cam
new crow cam
crow cam valve springs
new ls7 lifters
new push rods
new timing chain kit
new mellings oil pump
0ks on the engine!
. During the initial start up period the engine has run fine. Yet very shortly after driving the vehicle for the first time- engine under load . Noticed slight ticking from the engine, it is not present while engine is at idle. Bring the engine up to 1500rpm and it’s very clear even at a standstill no load . went through and unplugged individual injectors, pulled no5 and the ticking is gone

Piston slap or rod knock on #5. Rod knock is more a thump. Slap sounds a lot more like tappet knock. For giggles you might want to swap out injector #5 in hope it may be faulty resulting in a lean misfire there

I’ll check that injector out tomorrow . Also If it was valve train related the noise would be present with or with out that cylinder firing would it not??

I had this happen to me. Engine started ticking after a hard run on the highway. Was dead sure i lost a lifter, well after replacing the whole topend the noise was still there. Turned out to be a bad #6 rod bearing. Luckily the crank wasnt damaged so we replaced all the rod bearings. Problem solved.
