Default 97' LS1 block swap

I just got this 97' ls1 casting #12550592. I'm trying to go as cheap as I can with the build. Took the heads off and lots of burned carbon.. I really dont want to buy a rotating assembly just yet I'm focused on my t56. Can I clean it and still have a good running engine?

You most certainly can clean it. Takes a little elbow grease, but it will all clean up nice. A few questions for you...do you know the mileage on the LS1, and did you hear it run before you got it? What is your intended use for the engine? Are you tearing the engine down to clean?

I just want to make it stock for a bmw e36 swap. I'm trying to figure everything out as I go looking at forums. I cant post the pictures of my pistons and Cylinders for some reason. I didn't see it run. It turns a good. I bought it without readers or a oil pan. He said it was sitting for two years. It didnt have oil in it when I got it. I dont want to tear it down to rebuild. I want to clean it and start it but I feel like ima have to open it up and change bearings and rings.

Do I need to tear it apart?

Being as how there’s no oil pan on it, it would be super easy to pull a main cap and look at a bearing. If it sat for 2 years without an oil pan, I would have to expect it to be dirty inside, unless it was bagged up pretty well. The carbon won’t hurt anything. If cylinders look decent and it’s not full of spider webs and yard debris, button it up and send it.

I read that oiling holes sucked on these. Is that true? Would a tech change the oil pump or something to make up for that?

You can get oil pumps for these engines that offer varying pressures and volumes. The oil system in the OEM LS series engines does leave us all something to be desired, but it’s fine for most uses in its original setup...wet sump...below say 7k rpm.
There are also aftermarket pans available to help with control.
