Default LS1 PCM controlling an LS3

Hi folks!

I'm shoulder-deep in an LS3 swap into my '02 Z28. Details here if you care to read the full story.

I knew I needed a 24x reluctor, and had that taken care of early. It's just come to my attention that gen3 and gen4 cam sprockets are also different, and I think I might have to backtrack a bit and swap the cam sprocket.

Here's what I have that's relevant:
A gen4 cam sprocket, p/n 12586481 (shown above)
LS3 front cover with LS3 cam sensor.
Racetronix cam sensor adapter harness
0411 PCM (stock from my car)

So I have a gen4 sprocket and sensor, and the ability to connect that to my harness.

I just ran across some stuff that says that the gen4 sprocket is "only compatible with a 58x crank reluctor." Is this true? Do I need a different sprocket? Furthermore, is my sensor going to work right?

Thanks!

I think you may need the 1 X timing gear sprocket for the 24 X reluctor crankshaft.

Had this video saved in my bookmark folder... I think it may apply to your build.

Seems like it does apply -- I need a 1x cam gear.

Did some googling and found this super helpful doc: https://www.lingenfelter.com/PDFdown...nformation.pdf

That indicates that the cam gear I need is GM part number 12576407. Best price shipped I found was at Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

Too bad I figured this out after I got the entire front accessory drive assembled. 😭

24x needs a 1x cam gear and the 58x needs 4x gear. I did a dod in my gen 4 and needed a 3 bolt 4x instead of single bolt. Or run the 58x and get the box but since you have the 24x in there get the gear for it

A GTO 1x timing gear will work perfect, make sure the harness for your cam sensor is plugged directly into the cam sensor and not the little piggyback on the front cover, you will have issues when it’s trying to start, I did a full LS3 swap into a c5z if ya got questions shoot me a PM!

Racetronix sells two cam sensor adapters -- one intended to plug directly into the sensor, and one to the piggyback. I bought the latter.

Bought the same adapter harness parts. I used s Cloyes timing set for an LS1. Added the 2 bolt chain damper as well.
24x crank wheel.

Went into my C5. Runs damn well too.

You will also have to put the LS1 knock sensors on the side of the block.

RACETRONIX has some kick @SS stuff, I’ll be going back for some stuff through them for later builds, thumbs up on the knock sensor relocation! LS3’s are the perfect all around swap IMO enjoy!

I've read that, and I've also read that I can use LS3 knock sensors if I adjust for them in the tune. Right now I have LS3 knock sensors. We'll see how that goes....

I’ve not found any examples of that working. It will be interesting to try though.
