Default Head dowel help

I just purchased a set of clean, used 243 heads. It appears that three of the four dowel inserts are in them, but one is missing. I know I can get those easily.

But, I have questions as I don’t yet have the heads off my engine yet, and this is my first LS internal work.

The rebuilds I have seen, show dowels/inserts like these sticking up from the block. Do those go into the ones that my heads have or are they the same piece? I ask because the three I have fit flush to the head, so I don’t see how they go into the block and align unless something went in them, nor do I see how they would be flush to the head (as they are now) if they originally stuck out of the block (they should stick out to go in the block).

Thank you

The dowel pins should be installed in the block first, and then install the heads. They should not be in the heads when you install the heads.

Thanks. That was my understanding as well. If they are in my heads and appear flush in the head, are they likely broken dowels (they should stick out if they were once in the block)?

looks like either way I need to figure out how to pull these out with nothing really to grab.

A lot of times when the head is removed, the dowels stay in them. You lay them flat on something and the dowels get flush. Take a punch or screwdriver, and tap them out from the same direction as a bolt would go into the head. They come out pretty easy.
