Default Bearing Clearances Question and Help Needed

I'm working a completely stock 02 LS 5.3 build. I bought a standard size set of Clevite P-series main bearings, I'm measuring about .0028 in. bearing clearance on the mains. I could get some MS-2199H-1 .001 under which would put the clearance closer to factory spec, but the bearings are about $170, don't know if its worth it or maybe different brand bearing. Any recommendations for those you know these engines well?

I agree, .0028” would be fine but if you really want to get it tighter, you can look into having the bearings coated. I just had a set coated by Polydyne here in Houston. They can add .0005” to .0007” thickness onto each shell.
