Difference in cams
Stall speed ratings, recommended gearing, and RPM ranges on cam descriptions are basically bogus.
A 4.8 with a given cam might need a 5000 stall to perform optimally, where-as a 454 LSX with the same cam could choke out at 5000 RPM and start losing power.
The same goes with recommended gearing, where a 4.11 gear would be optimal for a car thats running a 28" tire, and absolutely abysmal for a car running a 22" tire.
So if you see a cam recommending a certain stall speed converter, its merely a recommendation. It is very likely not optimal, nor will it ever be a requirement.

You said "a high stall is something I've never dealt with". If you haven't then yeah it's gonna seem like something is wrong for sure. But when it blows both tires off like you said it does, it shows you how right a high stall is lol.
Get some real tires on there man, I used to run 315/35r17 tires and the car was like driving on ice with my 3800 stall, it caught me off guard one day when I just accelerated to go around a slow moving car in front of me, it kicked sideways between that car and the curb and took everything I had to keep it off the side of that car and off the curb. I didn't hit either, but that was also the last time I ran regular street tires on that car. It was like that all the time and spinning aint winning so I went to drag radials and it was a lot more fun and a hell of a lot more predictable.

Id throw our high lift asa cam in the mix, use a better and budget minded 3000-3200 circle d hp stall and likely some 3.73 gears and have ALOT more fun. It makes quite a bit of torque for a medium sized cam right around where youd like with power always on tap.
In a 99 m6 camaro with ls6 intake and milled .030 243s it made 430/420. And still easy to drive. I think based off what you've said, it would give you exactly what you want and give you the drivability you want!

man I know what you mean. It can go sideways quick!. I currently have 315/35-17 nitto 555 on the back. I have been looking into drag radials, toyo 888r proxes or nitto 555r. So they did make a noticeable difference for you..
no, car had a 2800 stall and a knocking ls1 when I got it. My current set up i just recently built. Maybe 200 miles since i built the 398 ci.

555's are junk. So are 555r's. I've had a couple of sets of 555r's. In my opinion they're just barely better than a normal street tire.
I tried M/T, BFG, Nitto, and Toyo drag radials on that car. My favorites were the toyo TQ drag radials by far. I LOVE those tires.
I don't know if they still make them or not, if they don't go with the Nitto NTO5R or MT ET pro radial.
One thing that also frustrated me was fitment. The nitto 555r, and M/T sat taller and skinnier than the BFG and Toyo radial. I had 11" wide Fikse wheels and the mother F ing skinnier tires did not provide any rim protection because they were too narrow and I scraped a wheel one day (totally my fault but if I had had the BFG or Toyo the rim would have been saved).
Ive had the best luck with m&h drag radials. Ive had a couple pairs of the original et street radials, one pair of 555Rs all 275 50 15s the m&h hook better and have a better tread pattern than the MTs. My buddy went from Hoosier 275 50 15 DR2s to MT ET street Rs and he loves them but practically no tread pattern.
After having driven 700+whp for 2 years on worn out Mickey Thompson ET Street Radials (the old ones, not Pros, or the new S/S or R), I thought that 555Rs on 400whp would be fine.
As soon as I went wide open, the car took a violent slide sideways and I went head first into a guard rail.
A year or so later I'm riding in the passenger seat doing a street tune with a guy with a super mild N/A.
He's spinning through every gear and letting out early and I'm having a hell of a time doing a tune.
I cracked the joke "Man, these must be Nitto's or something". He said "Yeah they are, why?"
We ended up dyno tuning it.
The radials made it far better, but need the right ones.

well then. Its not just me feeling that way about the 555's. If the 555'r are not any better i will definitely avoid them! It looks like the Tq you spoke of are still avaliable. I will go that route when the funds are avaliable. I planned on getting toyo extenza HP for street driving and would like to keep the D/R the same brand.
