Default Odd Sleeve Damage

Hello all, my first post here, been a long time lurker and finally found something worth a post.

So today I finally got around to pulling the heads on my junkyard L33 and I found this beaut!

This big pit just above the top ring and below the deck showed itself. I'm puzzled of what may have caused it. There is no other damage to the bore, head or piston.

My intentions were to gap the rings and let er eat but now I'm worried this may cause spontaneous premature engine disassembly under boost. It's too deep to bore out so re sleeve? Or just run it and hope for the best.

I got the whole engine from the yard for 600 Canukistan Copecs so it's not a huge loss but the aluminum blocks are a tough find up here. I'd like to save without turning over my first born to the machine shop. Thoughts?

How deep is it? Looks almost drilled.
If it is above the top ring and quite shallow, I'm not sure I would even JBWeld it. Run 'er as is!

It's junk, you should send it to me; I'll even pay the shipping. One way.

Just kidding (or maybe I'm not!). It doesn't seem to extend into the ring area, so I don't think it will hurt anything.

I, too, am curious as to how that happened. Detonation is the only thing I can think of; you should probably go over that thing with a fine-toothed comb for other damage.

I thought detonation as well but the cylinder head and piston look fine, I'm puzzled. I'm tearing into the bottom end on Tuesday when my dad returns my balancer puller to check bearings and such, thing looks mint aside from this dingle berry. I could TIG it up but more harm than good likely. Thinking of just smoothing out the edges and letting her buck, my luck it takes out the turbo and the whole front end of the car haha. Thanks for the looks, im more so intrigued by this than anything, cant fathom how the sleeve takes this damage and the rest looks fine, maybe a casting flaw who knows

Looks like that was there from day 1. Clean pistons to make sure rings are free, gap and go. No need to do anything more in the bores.
