I am about to tie up a build with cam in card pictured below. Goal is to have a 6.0L torque motor at well. I put in the LQ9 flat top pistons... and used 317 heads altho have a set of the 5.3 heads as well. I want to run 87 or 89 octaine.
If I had the money would have got AFR 205 mongoose heads. Roger Vinci at vinci performance helped me spec the camshaft.
I also got manton pushrods, installed solid bushing trunions, dual valve springs, balanced bottom end within 1 gram, etc etc etc
Building up a 4L60E in my garage to take the torque after motor is done. For now going to dial back power a bit and use stock 4l60e
The flat tops are a good move to boost compression. That will improve power and torque across the range. With the 87 or 89 requirement, we'd stick with the 317 heads. You'd be right around 10.2:1 with stock head gaskets. We'd recommend 89 fuel, especially when towing. Even then you may get some unwanted knock when towing and find that you'll have to pull some timing. It’s not a good idea to constantly pull timing. The chance is there that you'll have to up the octane or toss in some octane booster.
That cam looks pretty good for a balanced driver and tow-rig. The almost 4* IVO will certainly provide a noticeable idle/lope if that's something you're after. Good move on the supplemental valvetrain parts to help keep things stable. Also, a solid plan for the stock trans and future upgraded 4L60E.
Can someone help me understand why so many people will spend countless hours planning out and building up a setup to make more power, spend thousands of dollars, and then only wanna run low octane fuel?
It's like buying slicks for traction, and pouring oil on them. I don't get it.

Its simple really, The $2-$4 dollars saved at the pump per tank will make you feel better about yourself. The money saved over a year won't even make 1 months new car payment, But you will resist the urge to tell everyone you secretly want to own a Hybrid or an Electric Vehicle...
Someone throw a dart at the wall and pick a cam for me and then also buy my GMC so the misses doesn't bitch about me spending money...just forked out for all new windows in the house last night. Doing some side work tonight and will drop the 799's at the machine shop next week hopefully.
Knew a guy running regular in his (non-daily driver) Corvette, until I informed him he it had 11.5:1 compression. Thank goodness for low octane tables!

Around here its about .75 higher per gallon for 93, that adds up to $16 a week if you drive 15,000 miles a year at 13mpg. While not a HUGE difference it does add up to over $800 a year, BUT you may gain fuel mileage if your engine is NEEDING higher octane so the gap might become closer.
2k for heads to gain 20 ish hp = Oh hell yes take my money
$5-10 a week for an additional AT LEAST 20hp and tq (major stress on at least), higher mpg, safer setup, happier driver, more fun, peace of mind = Oh hell no **** that.

A little too small is better than a little too big. So
If you do a bit more driving than towing
Do the TSP 212/218 112 600 lift
Gonna tow quite a bit and if you want to save a few bucks and also want to just run LS6 springs.
Summit 8719R1
Honestly either should be fine for either. If you want to err toward a hair bigger TSP. If you're worried about it being too big and it's really critical that it's not, Summit cam.
I think that's the best I can personally sum it up. I love summits recommendations. I'd love to hear Darth throw out what he would do

The decision is in your court regarding the camshaft choice. Pooter summed it up really well. Obviously, we'd love for you to choose our cam but understand there are other options out there. Sounds like you need to make that decision sooner than later or the misses is going to find other uses for those funds
Thanks for all the back and forth and recommendations guys! I think that I'm leaning towards the summit cam, bigger would probably be nice and fun with the TSP, but I'm not looking for a hot rod truck this time, I've got the camaro for that. Just need the truck to be reliable, tow well, and decent mileage for a truck is an added plus. It should do what I need it to do, doesn't kill the wallet, and shouldn't be too much cam, I'd also love to hear what Darth would suggest if he see's this thread but I think I'm going to go with the Summit baring any new sugestions.
And yup 25 windows ain't cheap either, plus they're 12 weeks out. Also went up to PA this past weekend and picked up a new to me, practically new Kubota B2650 with 100 hours on it, so that ate up quite a bit of money. Truck towed it damn good and knocked back about 12/12.5 mpg towing loaded and just the trailer on the 350 mile round trip though. The short bed 26 gallon tank is going to take some getting used to having had a 36 gallon in the past.

Off topic again I know.... but id say my biggest complaint with my truck is also the small fuel tank. Im wondering if the big fuel tank from my 2000 1500 suburban might fit my 2002 2500hd?...... might have to get the tape measure out...
I know a few people make a bigger tank that will fit, Hot shot guys install them. But I think they are like 1000 bucks, not really a justifiable expense for me.
