Default Oil Pickup o ring.... again

I know there are already many threads out there on this topic, but I have something new. So basically I have a LQ9 crate motor and I’m swapping it into a third gen f body. The pickup tube that came with the motor had the recessed part for the thick red o ring at the end. My new Holley 302-2 kit does not. The o ring that came with that kit was no where close to ever being pushed in and I don’t know why. I took the stock red o ring (the fat one) and it snapped right in. I threw everything back together and had great pressure while priming the engine with the starter at 35 psi. Then after looking into it more I started panicking since the fat o ring isn’t meant for a straight pick up tube. I ripped everything off again and now I attempted to put in the blue o ring. It doesn’t snap in at all and does not sit flush with the pump unless you tighten the bolt. Any ideas on where to go from here? The red o ring that I pulled out was just fine so I probably just wasted all this time and money. The red o ring also took some pressure to get it over the pickup while the blue one is fairly loose fitting on the tube.

Last ls1 i helped a buddy piece together we used the red thicker o-ring on a pickup that's supposed to take the blue o-ring. Works 100% fine and he still has proper oil pressure after months now. I actually prefer using the red one as it's a tighter fit. You just have to make sure you seated it properly. Lubricate the o-ring and inside of oil pump with engine oil when installing makes it a lot easier.

I've also just finished installing my own LS2 into my own car and i should be starting it next week. It would have been sooner but i'm waiting for a few parts i needed that were different on the swap over. I used the thicker red o-ring in this engine also where it's supposed to use the blue one. It was a bit more difficult to get it seated with the 4th gen oil pickup compared to a different pickup that the engine i mentioned in the first sentence was using, so i'll let you know if it didn't work out.

The red definitely has a much better fit on my engine, so I’ll probably just end up throwing a new one of those back in. There’s just so much misinformation on this topic out there. Thanks for the advice man.

Well i started my LS2, i got the parts i needed from somewhere else. Another red o-ring success. I'm very happy with the oil pressure. It's going to need a lot of tuning. It's running small bore ls7 heads with titanium valves, 243/250 .660 108 +2 cam with 30 degrees overlap. It sounds insane. I didn't get a vid yet, i still need to tune it so it can idle.

That’s good to here. Just picked up a new red o ring yesterday so I can move past this whole thing. I should of just left it when it had 37 psi at cranking lol.

Yep you won't have any problems at all. As long as you install it properly.

Allow me to paraphrase one of The Great Ones in a totally unrelated field:

"If it WORKS good, it IS good".

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. And, don't outsmart yourself.
