Boring / piston replacement

Default Boring / piston replacement

If I bore my stock LQ4 too 4.020 can I buy a set of matched weight set of piston and install ? Or do I have too have the rotating assembly balanced.. would love some tru advise. Thank you all in advance for the help.

It’s always a great idea to balance the assembly. Most shops charge $250, if no heavy metal is needed. Will it run without balancing? Yes. It will cost you power and it’s hard on the main bearings if it’s way out, but it will run.

Due to the size difference, and being a different manufacture they will not match in weight. You can try and match the weight of the original pistons if its not much different. People have run stuff with out balancing it.

The reasons mentioned above are a good reason as why you should have it done.

IMO its just better to have it balanced. So far on mild performance rebuilds I have not needed heavy weight when they balance my stuff using a stock crank. Even when using an off the shelf forged piston or going from early press pin rods to floating rods and pistons.

Hi end performance stuff is different and dependent on what parts you use.

thank you very much for helping me out with this.. I was told by a lame!! machinist obviously at the local NAPA it would be ok since it was only 0.020 over .. soon as my first test drive I though it felt off just a little... I should have never second guess myself.,. Tons of money wasted.. lesson learned.. now too start all over
