Default Cleaning pistons and engine block ?

What's the best way to remove carbon from the top of the pistons without damaging them? And what's the best prep for the block for new head gaskets?

Thank you

Cover the lifter trays. Use a Razor blade on the deck. Wire wheel on the piston tops.

WD-40, of all things, makes a GREAT solvent for combustion crud. Plus, it cleans up easy, and leaves things somewhat lubed.
