Whats your budget? I know its low but just curious how much your able to spend. There are a few complete Lq4's on ebay from wrecks for around $1500 shipped.

It seems like I'm going to end up spending $1000-2000 on a 6.0... Avoiding Ebay cause I live in DFW and should be able to grab one without shipping.

If you can find a 6.0 with 317 cylinder heads that would be the way to go and your 241's will work as well but my thinking is you will also need a new tune with the 6.0.

I have a 6.0 shortblock that's Gen IV, a 5.3 short block that's Gen IV, a 5.3 long block that is Gen III and an LS1 rotating assembly but if it were me and I was doing an iron LS1 I'd get away from the press pin rods and go with the Gen IV rods.

100% agreed. So much great information in there. Really helps with searching car-part.com and LKQ and **** like that.

There are hundreds of thousands of LS based engines on the planet covering hundreds of millions, if not billions of miles collectively with powdered rods and hyper pistons. Things break when they get stressed in a way they aren't designed to handle. A stock build lasted 150k miles and 20 years of driving and according to the OP probably broke due to head gasket leaking. I think he'd be fine with another stock bottom end so long as other outside forces don't break it again.

Okay so he'd be fine with a seasoned LS engine.I have an LQ4 with 317's and about 364,000 miles sitting in my pickup truck with those same powder rods and pistons. I'm sure he would be okay with another stock engine and I'm still saying there's better alternatives.

Yea to be clear, I'm looking for a $400 short block to slap the top of my LS1 on.

Not a $4,000 rebuild passion project.

Well you damn sure wouldn't be getting a short block from me for $400.00. I mean $200 dosen't even cover the rings and bearings so I take it you have a lot of salvagable parts for this $400 short block.

The only thing you're getting for $400 is a used junkyard 4.8 or 5.3..or the off chance you find an aluminum 5.3 in the junkyard which would be the best case scenario...any 6.0 is going to run you in upwards of $1000. Most scrapyards pull 6.0s prior to putting the vehicle out since they know the value of them. My advise would be to save a grand or two and find something that's more worth the time and effort to swap.

Best advice yet on this thread yet. Don't half *** a build because you don't have the funds right now and you don't want to end up here again. If this isn't your DD park it save money and do a proper build.

FWIW - On any 4th Gen, I'd replace the intake manifold gaskets, no matter what short block. After 20+ years, they compress and water sitting on the manifold can seep into a cylinder. Hydro-lock can happen. The 4th Gen hoods can channel rain water etc on to the top of the engine.

At 18 years the intake gaskets on my 99 T/A were just about done for and nearly flat. They didn't spring back etc.

Yes not looking for a complete pullout or a built shortblock - looking for a stock used shortblock compatible with LS1 top bits.

This a great chance to do just that.
