LS1 rod snapped! Need engine suggestions
#22
It seems like I'm going to end up spending $1000-2000 on a 6.0... Avoiding Ebay cause I live in DFW and should be able to grab one without shipping.

I have a 6.0 shortblock that's Gen IV, a 5.3 short block that's Gen IV, a 5.3 long block that is Gen III and an LS1 rotating assembly but if it were me and I was doing an iron LS1 I'd get away from the press pin rods and go with the Gen IV rods.

Yeah okay tell that to another LS1 engine with a snapped connecting rod. Why don't you explain to me why the No. 6 rod gave out on a stock LS1 engine with 150k? Went out to start it one morning and clackity clackity! The powder rods suck and if your going to the effort to build an engine then put forged internals in the damn thing.

Okay so he'd be fine with a seasoned LS engine.I have an LQ4 with 317's and about 364,000 miles sitting in my pickup truck with those same powder rods and pistons. I'm sure he would be okay with another stock engine and I'm still saying there's better alternatives.

Well you damn sure wouldn't be getting a short block from me for $400.00. I mean $200 dosen't even cover the rings and bearings so I take it you have a lot of salvagable parts for this $400 short block.

The only thing you're getting for $400 is a used junkyard 4.8 or 5.3..or the off chance you find an aluminum 5.3 in the junkyard which would be the best case scenario...any 6.0 is going to run you in upwards of $1000. Most scrapyards pull 6.0s prior to putting the vehicle out since they know the value of them. My advise would be to save a grand or two and find something that's more worth the time and effort to swap.

FWIW - On any 4th Gen, I'd replace the intake manifold gaskets, no matter what short block. After 20+ years, they compress and water sitting on the manifold can seep into a cylinder. Hydro-lock can happen. The 4th Gen hoods can channel rain water etc on to the top of the engine.
At 18 years the intake gaskets on my 99 T/A were just about done for and nearly flat. They didn't spring back etc.
