Default Piston deck clearance check.

Whats the best and most accurate way to perform this check?

Last night I placed my deck bridge and dial indicator above the wrist pin on both sides after zeroing it on the block.

Am I over thinking it or is it that simple?

Any help is appreciated.

No, that's about it. Pretty straightforward really.

Another good way is with a straightedge and feeler gauges.

Most of these motors it seems the pistons are about .006" - .010" out of the hole. If you came up with something in that kind of range, it's probably believable.

So im checking a 04 LR4 and last night on the odd bank I got. 8-9 on # 1, 9-8 #3, 9-8 #5, 7-7 #7.

That’s how I do it. I use 2 dial indicators, one on each side of the bridge. Set both indicators to zero by setting the bridge on a true flat area of the block. Set the bridge over the piston and turn the assembly til you find TDC with the indicators. Rock the piston until both indicators read the same number. That’s your true out-of-the-hole number, or at least it’s as true as you can get it without oil pressure. Of course, if it’s a domed/dished piston, make sure both indicator needles are on level part of the piston crown.

A depth micrometer, used properly, would also work very well.
