Guys,This 4.8 chewed up a lifter, cylinder 8. Cam lobe ground the roller in half. I've been tearing it down for a Melling replacement. The cam is not coming out.
I'm stumped. It came out easily to this point, now It won't go any more. It's loose, I can go back, not out...
YouTube un-certified newbeee.. What am I missing? Lifters are out, nothing in the way as I can tell.
Thanks
Tboh
You should be past #8 with the first 4 lobes out. Try lifting the cam to center while turning it
Yes. I've been trying for hours to get the journals to center and go through the next bearings. I just took a look with an endoscope camera from the lifter bores and from below. Nothing seems to be blocking.
Theres the damaged lobe. Journals are all clean looking,
It's VERY common for #2cam bearing to move, or come loose, and stop the cam from coming out.. just keep working it back and forth.. it will come out..
It's a known issue.... Encouraging!!! I'm aggravated with it. I can feel the bearings line up on the journals so the shaft spins freely while I'm pulling in it but it will not go.

What bearing is #2? Can I check it?
#1 is at the front of the block, #2 is the next one, working front to back......
Theres a loose bearing free on the shaft. Probably the third from the front. It's rough and wont slip over the bearing of the camshaft. Must have been off for while running, Probably what caused the whole failure.. Can't get it from the top. Any thoughts on how to get it out/off?
Never replaced. Stock insides. 200,000 miles, The engine chewed up a lifter after $1500 worth of oil leak repairs. I have found a loose bearing thats preventing me from moving forward. I could get a chisel on if and cut it. Or a dremel tool?
Based on that, I think you're going to have to tear the whole thing down anyway. My thought is this- cut open your oil filter and look for glitter. If glitter is there, push the cam back in and start pulling the motor. From underneath, after it's disassembled you will be able to access that bearing and likely get it to slide how you need it to get the camshaft out.

I think you are in for a rebuild honestly
I would agree. The cam bearing likely spun in the journal, and it’s prolly toast. It’s fixable…but you could get into a 6 liter cheaper. Part the engine out and make a little money back.
Okay Guys,
I really appreciate your insight and advice. I went in from the bottom and was able to position the bearing on the journal. It was just snug and it did come out with a push from inside and a pull. One man job. The last journal was nothing. slid right out through the loose bearing as it was centered on #2 bearing.
The cam has one lobe ground down badly, three lobes with severe wear, no journal damage at all.
The free spun? bearing is nasty looking. Bearings one and two are tight in place and look rough but I don't know if that's normal? Maybe metal in the oil has caused this damage?
I'm wondering about the crank bearings now.
Thank you all for the discussion. I have a bunch of new parts to put into this beast to get more groceries and for city driving. Stock. I don't know of I'd be ruining a bunch of good parts.
