Default Lifter Tick Up Hill

So as the title says, I have been getting lifter tick when going up hill, but ONLY if I maintain revs above 2500rpm. It goes away eventually when on level ground. The motor only has about 4k miles. I tried adding an extra quart of oil and that did not do much. I am using a knock off Holley 302-2 oil pan and about to change it to a muscle car pan with a deeper sump (for other reasons mainly). Any other suggestions?

That actually sounds more like an exhaust leak from your description

Really? All I can say is I can get the noise to go away by holding it 3000rpm while flat or driving a few miles flat. I can go up hill normally keeping rpm below 2000 and it will not cause a tick.

What is your oil pressure like when this ticking starts? What is this engine in?

Mostly unchnaged. Stays in the mid to high 30s regardless of ticking or not at about 1500rpm. Stock oil pump and clearances.

Ok. Somehow I took from your first post it only ticks uphill but not downhill. I must have misunderstood your first post.

That is correct, I have only heard it happen after going up hill. Going down hill, even rev matching to engine brake will not cause it.

Uphill your under load regardless of rpm. I’d look at detonation. You can see evidence on the spark plugs if it’s that bad. They will look like they have been blasted with large sand in spots. It’s happened to me before, same description.

Ill check but it will tick at idle for a few min at level ground after the tick initiates after going up hill. I have put the Jeep under extended load on a level road and I wont get ticking.

I THINK I have figured it out. Changing the oil pan and therefore the pickup tube, the o-ring came out torn. It did not come out hard removing the tube and I do not remember it being hard to put in when I assembled the motor. The motor I guess was so new the oil pressure was just high enough to not cause alarm, but since switching the pan setup with a new oring, pressure increased A LOT. Have not had the tick yet, but tomorrow ill be taking the same up-hill route on my way home and ill know then.

I hope he installed a oil pump pick up brace when he did it.
