Default No Cam endplay

I installed a new summit cam retainer plate and installed my new cam gear which is a summit single roller unit with a built in thrust bearing to check endplay and didn’t even put a dial indicator in it as I can’t feel any wiggle at all. Any advice ? The engine is a lq9 fresh from the machine shop if that matters. The cam spins freely in the engine I don’t think it’s a bearing issue. TIA

If it spins freely with everything properly buttoned down, you should be good.
You really don't want or need "obvious" endplay.

If it doesn't turn after tightening the thrust plate, you may need to chamfer the retaining plate. Threads here will explain, if you do a search. Don't worry about over thinking things. Most mistakes happen when not enough thought is put into the task at hand...

Check it with an indicator.

threw a dial indicator on it and have no endplay with the new cam gear. Cleaned up my old one and put it on to check and have .005 of endplay. Seems like the new cam gear is too tight. Should I just run my old gear or is that a bad idea ?

Run the old gear. You must have endplay.

You asked him if it spun freely when "buttoned down." I never saw a response to that question at that point.

sorry I didn’t respond to that. It’s definitely a little harder to spin with the gear that has no endplay.

This is what I was referring to earlier. TO ME, if it spins freely there should exist SOME end play. No end play would not allow free spinning.

yeah you’re right I worded it weird. It’s a little harder to spin with the new gear and easier to spin with the old gear.
