Oil Sump Design In the LS1, the bottom of the oil sump tube has what can only be described as a “restrictor plate.” It is a metal plate with a slit type opening.
What reason would GM have for putting that plate there? I understand not wanting the pump to suck the pan dry, but that could be solved with the Pressure Bypass Valve.

If the inlet or diameter of the pickup tube is 20 - 30% larger than the inlet port on the pump, the tube will never become a restriction or cause cavitation inside the pump
The only function the screen or cover performs is to prevent big chunks of debris from being sucked into the oil pump.
