Default How does this bearing look?

I'm rebuilding my 6.0. with unknown miles. Trying to decide how deep I should go with it.

Can't feel any grooves with my finger nail.

Bearings are cheap. Replace them. If your rod bearings look like that, your cam bearings are probably going to look worse, in my experience. May as well do it right the first time, you know? If you have to go that far into it, there's no reason to reuse bearings.

The bearings out of my 150,000 mile LS1 looked better than that. You should have the crank polished while you're at it.

Get some Crocus cloth for the polishing and go back together with Clevite P-Series rod and main bearings. If you have the tools and know how to check the parts and you're able to replace the cam bearings yourself then no need to send it to the machine shop.

Ive built engines before and have most of the tools but I do not have a cam bearing installer and that's one thing I've never done and hesitant to do.

What about decking or align honing the rods or anything like that?

I've read that you should get the LS specific cam bearing tool.

Should I get it honed and put new rings in it?

Even if the bores check out I'd still run a flex hone through there and I would definetly run a new set of rings. You're too far into the engine to not replace these wear items but if your crank, rods and pistons check out then I'd run them again.

You can align hone the main caps/saddles, but I doubt you'll need it. But there's no align honing rods. They can hone the rods. If you have a rod or milling machine vise, you can torque the rod caps and measure the roundness/size with proper tools. I agree with the crocus cloth. You could rough up the rods big end with 400 black sandpaper with cap torqued in place. One other thing I'd do, even with a mild build, and that would be to get some new ARP rod bolts/nuts. As long as you're in there, I agree with doing it right. Good luck.

Keep in mind, with cracked cap rods you have to go oversized on the bearing shells if you have the rods honed. They make off the shelf bearings for this purpose.
