Default Crankshaft Keys (woodruff)

With my forged crank, I got both of these keys. I'm guessing the smaller one goes first with the timing/crankshaft sprocket. Then the larger one goes on the hub. The larger one is the same size as the oem crankshaft. That's where I'm getting confused a little. Thanks.

Some cranks have 2 spots, mine only has 1.

No, long one is for crank gear and oil pump drive, small on is for balancer. I’ve never seen an LS crank with one long key way slot like that,

Do you think it's a manufacturer error?

No, probably a manufacturer shortcut, easier to make one vs two

They Keys you have won't work. You will need to make a custom key using Key stock material.

Thats discouraging. BTR sent both keys with their kit. Was thinking they would have all the right pieces to fit the stuff they sent out.

Well, that sucks. Figured a big name company wouldn't want quality over quantity.

Would you have to make the half moon shapes in a custom key, or can it just be squared off?

You can get that long key at Ace Hardware. It’s a very common key. I have key material in my shop, and I cut them to length.

Thanks! Do you cut them straight and not worry about the half moon shape?

Your crankshaft is cut for a flat key, not a semi-circular style key. Your just looking for a flat, square key. Measure it for length, as well as the width of the key channel. You’ll need to measure with a mic, then carry the mic with you to Ace, Lowes, etc. to measure the key, to make sure it’s right. It should be a standard size. They both carry the keys. Home Depot and Menards prolly does also.

If I may make a suggestion.

Cut an angle on 1 end and put that angle side down facing out away from the motor. If the key gets stuck, You will be able to drive something under it and Lift it out. Hope that helps

Sorry, I don't have pictures right now. Rotating assembly is out getting balanced.

Yessir. The longer key on the right in the above picture would likely work if placed right, and it’s got a nice rounded bottom to it, just for the purpose of removal as your suggesting.

Here is an example of a key I made for a straight cut key way like that. This just regular key stock with just a simple angle cut on 1 end that allows me to get under it if needed to remove it.

Awesome thank you for the pictures. I'm waiting on BTR to get back with me. They are thinking they may have a single key for these crankshafts. We shall see.

Update: So, BTR sent me a long woodruff key. It fits the slot perfect. However with this 2 piece timing setup, you can see it doesn't fit much metal inside. I took the key, and grinded some more angle on it and it sits in all the way. And its pretty snug. I put the other hub on before I snapped a picture of it.

Hopefully everything is good to go with it. I had to hit the hub on with the oem one. It took some moderate hitting but not over the top.
