Richard ran it on a 5.3 and it was an improvement over the LS9 cam everywhere. He said himself that the Ls9 cam has a soft low-end, but is it really that bad? im also assuming that a 6.0 would handle the low-end better than the 5.3? About compression, assuming it wouldn't cause PTV issues, I wouldn't be against running a thinner head gasket to give a bit more of a compression bump. Might have forgot to add, but just thought I better say that this truck really wont be doing any "truck" things like towing, hauling a load, etc.
The reason some of us are giving you advice and trying to steer you a different way is because of real life experiences in our vehicles. Richard knows his stuff he just does but many of us have tried cams that were supposed to be home runs and they are up top and very sluggish down low in heavy cars. You can do as you wish it’s your money. But remember advice is free and mistakes sometimes cost money.

Make sure you have the right diff gearing for the cam. I wouldn’t go with less than a 3.73 even if you’re not towing. I would definitely go with a Magnum F out of the group. It’s geared with a 2.66 first gear and countershaft (close gear ratio) and you’ll be able to put plenty of tq through it. In stock form it’ll handle 700ft lbs. Remember with heavy vehicles it’s more about how much tq your trans and clutch handles more then hp for longevity because weight plays a role.

What type of rear end are you going with?

I understand, and I really appreciate the guidance. I'm 17, so definitely less experienced than many of you on here lol. For transmission, The magnum would definitely be my choice, money aside, but that may have to be determined at a later date. I will definitely keep the gear ratios in mind. In terms of rear end, I was thinking about the GM 10 bolt 8.5in. I still have to do my research but as of now it seems it may be a much easier, and possibly more affordable swap than some others, even with possibly upgrading whatever necessary. Another option is a 04 suburban 3/4 ton rear end, axels and all, which I already have laying around. I've heard these can be pretty solid rear ends, as long as I keep launches with sticky tires to a minimum. I don't have measurements or anything yet, But I'm just a bit concerned with the fitment of that, along with the track width.

I’d definitely go with the suburban rear end a much more stout and robust rear end. Again we are just trying to help. And in 20 or 30 years you’ll be in here talking to another 17 yr old kid wanting to make sure he doesn’t throw away his money. Good luck buddy glad to see young men still interested in wrenching and the go fast trade. 🫡

I was at the road course a few years back. A guy had a 2000 Mallet Corvette. That car originally came with a 240ish degree intake duration cam and could barely idle. Maybe retuning would help but a smaller cam would have been better all the way around. So something around 240 duration can work but not well.

thanks! and yeah, the suburban rear end may be the route I go, just gotta check the measurements and everything to make sure it'll somewhat fit

Yeah, I wouldn't want to put a 240 intake duration cam in, not sure if it would even work as the intake valve is what would hit first and I think a 240 would be pushing it. Thanks for the info though!

Hello again, im just kind of finalizing my choice of cam, hoping maybe someone has ran one of these or similar. Its between the summit stage 3, summit stage 4, and Btr stage 3. Will include links below. The summit stage 3 is 232/242 113+3, .600/.600 Lift, and the BTR stage 3 is 231/244 .630"/.615" 112.5+2.5. The durations are pretty close, but How much power would I really be gaining with the extra lift on the Btr? The Btr stage 3 lift is more that the summit stage 4!? Then That brings me to the question of how much more bottom end will these stage 3's gain over the stage 4? I know a stage 4 will be rougher down low and all, but say it was in a race scenario, would the stage 3's just pull harder down low enough to compensate for the little bit they may loose at the top end? Also, This engine will probably be revving in and around 6500rpm, mabye less. Based on dyno graphs It seems like I may not be maximizing the potential of the stage 4 at that rev range? if thats the case, would the stage 3's make about the same power up high since i may not be revving high enough to even let the stage 4 really gain its advantage? thanks again.

I ran something similar to your top choice is was a custom grind. It had a tad bit more of lift .615 in and out and the intake lobe was 234. I used it for nitrous. I was making a solid 538 rwhp on a mustang dyno through an auto on the juice and 414 off the bottle. I revved it to 7200 rpm’s with ease and no issues but the power didn’t start to come in till about 3200rpms. I was lucky because it was a corvette and it was a light vehicle 3480 with me in it at the time. Oh and it was on a 112 LSA.

right on, another quick question for anyone on here. If I am going to run that summit stage 3 that I listed, I guess I would also step the springs down to maybe the BTR 0.630"s to be a bit easier on the cam, lifters, etc. I was wondering how this would affect a boosted application when compared to the BTR 0.660" kit. Since the 0.630' kit says " naturally aspirated applications only.". Am I better off going with the 0.660" kit since I would like to boost in the future?

Thank you
