Default Camshaft Casting Damage or ??? , run it?

Hey guys,

I bought a used truck norris camshaft from someone on FB Marketplace. When I received it I see a few things. Most concerning is this "chip". Looks like the chip is stuck next to the lobe. My thought is give it a little emery cloth and motor oil polish and run it since it's in the edge of the lobe. Rollers hit more in center correct?Thoughts and opinions?

Try cleaning it up with some 600 grit sandpaper, like you say. If it buffs, send it.

It was shipped in socks wrapped in cardboard, so who knows what happened through the USPS escort service 😂. I'll prolly hit it with some sandpaper and motor oil. The first image is the worst. Not too concerned about the others, barely catch a fingernail and not in the roller path.

I'm thinking if it blow then I'll get another junkyard block and boost it next round!

Concrete stairs! From 50 feet up!! I'd check it out MY-T close before installing. Make sure it spins feely in the bearings, too...

I'd roll it on something flat to make sure it's not bent, which in this case it very well could be.

This. I’ve seen brand new cams show up bent…this one is gonna miss a good chance of being bent, if it’s not. looks like the delivery guy used it for batting practice.
Wash it real good, oil it and slide it in to see if it will turn easy. It’s hard to see a half a thou out, rolling it on a plane of glass however…

I'd send it back for a refund.

I would definitely send it back if it were purchased new. However, I bought used so here we are, obviously this is the risk you take!

Thought I would get some input from the people here. Sounds like the consensus is that I should have it reground or buy another cam.

Yeah, it is not worth "nothing" but when you are not paid by the hour and enjoy tinkering it's not as big of an issue. More of a hobby than anything, if I was going to the track and needed to rely on this it would be different you know.

As I said, if the area the rollers ride on is OK, then thats the first part that checks out. If installed in the block with new bearings, and it spins, it's probably not bent enough to cause problems, and then the second part checks out. If it doesnt spin, pitch it.....

Yes, this is the path I will go. I may also put it in, see exactly where the rollers are riding after multiple rotations, and make a decision from there.
