The oil had decent oil analysis from forum members(they sent them often), but from time to time we would see a exhaust cam bucket get eaten when running it (not saying it was for sure the oil or lack of maintenance, but in the early years guys wee nice to the cars), these engines are hydraulic cam on bucket type lower springs pressure etc. Lots of guys switched to Rotella t6 back then as it was easily available and Audi called for 0w40/5w40 and in all these years I've never found a post of a lifter bucket having failed and pretty much perfect Blackstone lab reports that others sent in on many high mile engines (some 300k) over the popular years of ownership. I ran t6 in that car from about 2005 till I hurt the stock engine from power around 2020. I removed the cats and kept them around 2015 as they are high quality and in perfect condition with 100k+ miles of t6 ran through them. Lifters and cams were perfect as were bearings etc I just pushed the stock rods too far.

I ended up using t6 it in my 383 C5Z when it was NA around 500whp. Oil saw 302F on the road course a few times and with about 15k on the engine I pulled the camshaft when going turbo (which was an xer 238 242 605/610 lift) out and the lobs and lifters were perfect easy to sell that cam. Continued to use the same shortblock into my turbo build that made 1000whp with no oil issues. I'm not recommending anything, Rotella t6 zinc has dropped from around 1400ppm to 1200mmp or a bit less, but for all the examples out there, turbo cars, millions of motorcycles, etc running this crap it's doing ok from my personal experience.

As for the OP's question those oils get use a lot in the German car crowd and I've not seen or heard of any issues. They probably meet the Audi/VW standard on the 5w40 stuff. give it a go and see how pressures sit etc.
Is the theory that the Mobil 0w40 failures are due Mobil’s 40w’s are on the “thin” end of the 40wt scale? I’ve read that theirs is barely a 40 weight and that it’s pretty close to a 30.

And that the use of Deoxs spec approved oils in the name of saving catalytic converters is phooey.

I wouldn't consider it total proof of anything other than some nice really large data points. Testing always trumps theory in my opinion and to say what I did was very controlled is not really true, but it's just a decent snapshot.

Cheap, Synthetic, high shear stability, and lots of zinc
Rotella T6 is made for diesel engines. Gas engines don't usually get hot enough to fully activate the ZDDP package in it, also diesel oils don't do well with high RPM.

Go with something like Redline or Driven DT40 or Mobil 1 0w40

Liqimoly is formulated for many different engines, they have multiple part numbers for 5W40 for instance...
Its a darn good high volume production oil used in a lot of new cars over in the EU.

As far as I have found, every major car oil manufacturer that gets ther name on a sticker under the hood PAID to get it there...

FWIW my engine builder that did my 911 engine recommended the Liquimoly as the daily driven oil for my car as an alternative
to Joe Gibbs DT40 because its a pain in the backside to find it on the shelf any more out here in the NW where I live...

just another oil thread....

I've not seen Driven on the shelf by me.

But I usually buy direct or through Summit.

There is now a “gas truck” Rotella. I believe now they also have a “Multi vehicle” formula as well. Rotella “Gas Truck.”

I think its a east cost vs west coast thing, recently Car quest went ***** out on buying every small chain on the west coast, we have little to no specialty hi performance parts shops left... Joe gibbs also sold driven product off to another company and they don't seem to care that some things need to be on the shelf. My 911 uses almost 10 quarts per change and gets changed every 6 months or 3500 miles. ( I have a brand new ground up rebuild in it bumped from 3.6 to 3.8L... ) its a hoot to drive and I drive it a lot.. I mail order Liquimoly now because suddenly its gotten hard to find a stocking dealer for the correct version of the oil.. so I'm stocking 4 of their 5qt jugs ahead of my oil changes... but it used to be carried by NAPA but they are trying to get customers to switch to their new formula but they have been lazy about getting manufacturer approvals. (Porsche/Audi/and some of the hyper car brands.)

Once I had purchased direct from Driven, I periodically get notices of discounts and free shipping. I think that brings the price down to Summits. Both ship quickly.
