Default strange ls oil pressure

hello i needing help with an strange issue with im having with my 2001 s10 swapped to a 4.8

the issue im having is the motor will have great oil pressure at start up 45psi at 900 rpms

then after either letting it idle for a really long time or a short drive of less than 5 miles my oil pressure will drop to 20 and wont increase with throttle

what makes it strange is that if i stop and turn the truck off then right back on i have good oil pressure again if anyone has any insights into what could be the problem i would greatly apricate it

15w40 oil and a brand new glow shift oil pressure gauge and sender

Oil is a little thick for an LS engine.

If you need heavier oil to keep the oil pressure up you've got bigger problems going on.

I'm betting it's an electric pressure gauge?

How many miles on the 4.8? 15w40 IS a lot heavier than recommended for an SBE LS. 5W30 usually gets it done.
As said, is your gauge electrical? Check the pressure with a mechanical gauge to be sure. They're more accurate.

The fact that you can turn the engine off and then right back on with normal results certainly suggests an electrical gauge glitch.

Anyway, here's a data point: I have two ls engines with 200K miles in my vehicles and both read 40 psi at 600 rpm cold idle, 60-ish at around 2500 rpm. Hot they both are about 5 psi less at the same rpm points.

I refuse to listen to your last comment…don’t lie to yourself. Question for you here…on the oil pan, the block off plate for the oil cooler lines…what are you doing at that intersection? What plate is on the pan, with what gasket under it? If that’s wrong there…which is easy to do!…it can cause pressure issues like your having. Any pics of that plate?

Gotcha. That’s the plate I run on my builds, when no cooler is being used. Now….which gasket are you running with this plate? There’s a 2 hole gasket, and a an open gasket that’s black metal. If you get the gasket wrong..which I’ve seen done before more than once…your bypassing the filter.

Did you rebuild this engine, or is it a pullout buy?
