Default End play with coated bearings

Just got around to putting my 408 lq4 together, I put the crank in, tightened all the mains inner bolts to 15ftlbs, hammered the crank back and forward a few times then hammered it to the back, checked my endplay and holding it forward with my hand I get .003. I loosened the thrust bearing cap and did hand tight and re aligned the thrust with the inner bolts hand tight then back to 15ftlbs and I still get .003 holding it forward by hand. They are clevite coated bearings and I know some people say they run tight on the thrust. Does that seem too tight and should sand it a bit?

I like .0045 minimum for a stick shift car and .007 minimum for an automatic car. I build a lot of engines. I figure thrust during first mock-up. Gotta build the engine before you final build the engine.

Just sanded and polished some out of the front of the thrust bearing and did a test with just the #3 cap with center bolts torqued to 30 and I get .004-.0045 now

When torquing the cap with some force on the crank I was able to get .005 right where I want it. Unfortunately I forgot to put force on the crank after re cleaning and installing and final torquing them. I remember to smack the crank but didn't pry while torquing. I have .003 now but that's with assembly grease on the thrust. Think it would be worth to loosen the #3 main, pry towards the front and retorque #3 or just leave it?

I’d 100% loosen the #3 main and re-center it. You’ll regret it if you don’t. Only take you maybe 10 minutes….
