Default ARP Main Studs - Line Hone Needed?

Hello,

Rebuilding a Gen III 6.0 ironblock. It will have a Gen4 Rotating Assembly. I would like to run ARP main studs, however, seems to be some confusion whether or not line honing is needed or not due to the nature of how the ARP studs clamp. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Im sure some have done it and suffered no consequences, but I wont. If you have a dial bore gauge you can torque one set of fasteners, then the other in a test.
You’ll see for yourself how much the bore moves around and turns oval.

same story for rods, and head bolts/studs. Always use the fastener the hole was prepped for.

My machine shop recommended a line hone when I said I was using main studs. It's a different clamp force compared to bolts

Here’s a picture that proves you must line hone with ARP studs. I took this picture last summer while building an engine for a client, just to show others why. The dark “shadowing” area is where the hone did not touch. The bore is 100% out of round due to the extra clamp force from the studs. This picture is the finished product, after honing was complete.
