Default Oil Pump M10296 Fitment Help

Oil Pump Help

Hi all, just wanted to confirm that my oil pump is sitting right. I’ve got a crow cams double chain equipped underneath my Melling 10296, I’m running the included spacers that came with the chain kit in order for the pump to clear the assembly but now the pump does not sit flush on the crank gear. Just wanted to confirm that this was due to the spacers and won’t be an issue.

Note: I’ve checked for pump being centred and can move the large gear in and out no problem 🙂

Did you use feeler gauges to centre it?

Are the spacers positioned correctly on the pump backside......only reason i mention it is because Beater Bomb had oil pressure issues due to the spacer covering a portion of the feed.

The lack of "flush" won't hurt anything, in and of itself.

Make sure your crank damper can go all the way down into the pump gear and tighten against the little sleevie thing, so that it doesn't bind up the drive gear, which is supposed to "float" freely on the sleeve.

yep - made sure that pump was centered usuing 0.05mm shims all around (0.002 inch)

Thank-You everybody - After all of this, I ended up actually swapping to an upgraded single row chain and recentred the pump. cheers!

seems reasonable, The duplex is regarded as not necessary for the LS platform at all & cloyes LS2 + is plenty

I have a Cloyes DBL roller and the 10296 pump on my LSX build. I did not take my pump apart to use a feeler gauge or shims and for all I know mine looks similar to what you had going on there. IMO there was still plenty of engagement on the oil pump gear.

No need to take anything apart and measure anything when setting up a pump, because the crank is only centered in the bearing when the engine is running and has oil pressure. At rest it’s off centered…depending on bearing clearances of course…by as much as .001+. I’ve talked with Melling tech at length on this subject, and they agree that’s it’s not necessary to measure anything. They recommend that you set the pump on the stands, run all 4 bolts on by hand until they just touch the pump mounting bosses, then turn the engine 2 complete revolutions. Torque the bolts to 22 ft lbs. Done. The feeler gauge method was thought to be a thing 15 years ago or so, but it was never factual.
