Understanding PCV
I don't understand PCV / Crankcase ventilation systems, I've seen pictures of some people having different "breather" setups, but I don't see any info on this.
Can someone point me to someplace that explains this? Do I even need to worry about it?

it draws the gaseous fumes out from the block during blow-by...there is a pressure that is inside the engine under the pistons, around the crank, in the oil pan, etc...the pcv system draws this pressure out. this also keeps the gas from the fumes from getting into the oil...

What kind of different PCV setups can you have? I've heard of people using a seperator and oil return line then bleeding off the pressure out into the world before? Does anyone sell a kit for this? Is it necessary?
It seems like a bad idea to vent this back into the intake, wouldn't that rob quite a bit of power?

You would loose way more power by not pulling a vacum on the crank case. Look at why all the hard core racers use vacum pumps etc... You need the vacum, and the fumes it draws out does very little compared to a motors performance with no vacum on the crank case etc... Emissions does require it to go back into the motor and so on but in race applications they would just vent it to the attmosphere etc... So it really depends on what you are trying to gain? I suggest using the current setup with modifications such as a catch can etc... before trying to run a vacum pump on a street car anyways. Just my .02 and I am by far no expert just learning the whole PVC thing myself in detail recently etc...

Great, that is what I wanted to know more or less. Are there gains worth having by doing a seperate vacuum pump and venting the crankcase gas out? I really do not care if my car passes emissions.
