Hotcam powerband questions

Hotcam powerband questions
Hey guys, I was wondering how high in the rpm range the hotcam spins, or if redline is still at the stock 6k or so. Also, where does this cam put my power? Is it good in the low and midrange or is it more up top? The reason I ask is because my car is a daily driver and will rarely see the track, so I want a cam (once I finally get around to buying one) with USABLE power on a daily basis. What, if any, are the benefits of tuning with this cam on an m6?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
It depends alot on your exhaust. If you are using the stock exhaust with the hotcam then you are going to be making peak power right around where the stock cars do (~5400). If you have a modified exhaust then it is going to start shifting up in the RPM band.
The hotcam is a very friendly-mild-increase-in-HP, no compromise cam. Personally, I prefer a more aggressive grind, but if it is a problemless mod that you are looking for then the hotcam could be your ticket.
Good Luck,
Kevin

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
I run an exhaust cutout, so I imagine as you said that the power would shift upwards a little. Does the hotcam still make decent power in the midrange and just peak at 5400+ or does it not really start to pull hard until it hits that area of the powerband? Also, how high does this cam rev?

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
Blk98Bird,
Sounds like you are going the same route as me. (I just replied to you post about Macs.)
I'm looking to go make the most reliable power for mainly street use on a budget. I'm hoping hotcam will work well with my Macs. As for everyday, I feel hotcam is one of the best choices for an M6 since you can run reliable LS6 springs, with a relatively low-lift hotcam and not worry about reliability. Some people have seen some serious gains with this cam. Plus the price is amazing.
I plan on installing hotcam this summer. Good luck!

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
Let's assume stock heads, mid or longtube headers and a free flowing exhaust:
The hotcam will make strong midrange power - at least comparable to the other, more aggressive cams out there. Based on what I've seen, it will fall off some on the top end relative to say a TR224 or the like. Power peak should be around 6100rpm or so and I feel comfortable with a 6500-6600rpm redline with the LS6 springs and stock valves. Plan on shifting around 6400rpm or so.

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
Thanks for the info guys, it's good to hear that the cam will make good midrange with midlengths because as Tommy said I have another thread going about mac's i'm thinking of purchashing. It's also nice to see the cam can run a little higher into the rpm range than stock as I plan on running 4.10's. My hope is that the gearing helps me with the hole-shot on the low end and then reach the powerband rapidly, and remain there easily with the higher rev limit. Low end torque is great as well but I want to make sure I don't have TOO MUCH (is there such a thing?) in the low end or I'll have trouble hooking up with the 4.10's .

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
I shift my hotcam at 6500 and rev limiter is set to 6800. I've never tried different shift points. If I had LS1 Edit instead of Fastchips then I'd try and see what the best rpm is to shift at.

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
My car with the Hotcam (+ all the usual bolt-ons, and PCM tuning) peaked at 370 RWHP at just under 6200 rpm. Very strong midrange power too.
For a daily driver with only occasional track use, it's hard to beat the HotCam for bang-for-the-buck value. The fact that it is also easy on the valve train is a big bonus too (relatively low lift + not necessary to spin motor above the stock rev limit to get the most out of it).
Hope this helps,

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
Thanks guys it's great to hear positive feedback on this cam since I don't think I'll need much more aggressive for what I want. First gotta get the suspension built and 4.10s in, then it's headers and cam time come summer (I hope, college costs money!) .
btw I used to have relatives in rogers park, I know exactly what you mean

Re: Hotcam powerband questions
I have an M6 and was looking into the HOTCAM myself. Is the HOTCAM just as reliable as the LS6 cam? I was leaning towards the LS6 cam at first because my car is still under warranty and the idle is stock, but I just can't resist the idea of having the sound of the HOTCAM and still keep my stock heads!
