comp 985 spring failure pictures
if anyone was or wasn't following my other thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/207260-help-down-7mph-3-4tenths.html I found the source of the problem. there are about 5 springs that are 'broke' like these pics show. they had less than 2k miles on them and probably around 75 passes at the track. anyone ever seen springs fail like this???

what would cause your springs to break at the tips like that? thats all sorts of f#cked up. thats not an fouled installation, so its got to be some sort of failure in the manufacturing process. have u talked to comp yet?

well if you installed this springs exactly to spec(as i'm presuming you did), and you were using them in a fashion which was within their design threasholds, and they just up and quit on you, and then **** all over your motor, then there is definitely something wrong. especially if you don't have a ton of miles on these. are there any special circumstances? high miles? lots of high rpm's?

yep, gator is right. about 1000 miles and probably 75 passes.
my limiter is at 6800 rpms, but I usually shift at 6500ish. the lift on the cam was 602 and the springs are supposed to be good to 620 I think. they were installed by the head porter, so they should have been done right.

It doesn't look like that's correct retainer for that spring. It being smaller than the O.D. of the spring is causing undue stress on the tip, causing it to break. The correct retainer is .007" larger that the O.D. of the spring.

lol....well the retainer that is actually recommended for that spring is a larger retainer, but I do now see where you are comming from on the LS-1 retainer your looking at. That actual retainer is only a 1.300" O.D., I wouldn't use it in this situation. The only thing I could say is that the spring isn't staying located properly and allowing it walk enough to put undue stress on that little spring tip..btw you have a pm
