Default oil pump failure ?????'s

I have 35000 miles on my 2000 ss and I am about to put on a sts turbo kit. I am kinda worried about the oil pump failing. should I be? or should I replace the on I have in it now? If it does fail, I am going to have to rebuild my motor right. I always run castrol syntec 10w30 in my car. thanks for the help

I checked out their site, but I'm still not 100% sure how much stress the STS turbo is going to put on your engine's oiling system. I just replaced my stock oil pump this week with a ported LS6 pump from Thunder Racing for a number of reasons:

1) I have 81,000 miles on my 2000
2) I've read quite a few stories about '00 and earlier models having oil pump failures
3) My oil pressure was fluctuating a lot, even dropping down to about 28 psi in stop/go traffic

While the oil pump might not have been the root cause of my oil pressure problem (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't), replacing it and the pickup o-ring solved it. I now have 45psi at idle and around 60 psi at 2500 rpms. For about $150 (not including money I spent on tools and such), that's great peace of mind.

It wasn't an easy job for me, but if I can get it done, I'm pretty sure anyone can.

I only have a little more than 35k on my car, and I am always watching my oil pressure gauge. Just in case... But I can't see replacing a part that works fine with 35k miles on it. Some have failed, and some haven't.

What happens is the pressure relief valve gets stuck. Potential time for that to happen is after cam or head swap due to carbage falling into the pan and ending up sticking the valve. I doubt the new pump is better with this respect. It's rare that the pump really goes out like the gears fail or the housing cracks. Though, a ported unit is a good idea when you start to stress the motor.
