JE moly file fit rings. My friend is using the childs & albert, and another is using the total seal. I ditto the total seal rings are garbage. That guys car eats up a lot of oil too.

Default what piston rings are you guys using?

i've had a bunch of diffrent options up in the air as far as this goes but im really looking at something i can file fit or check end gap on. the total seals and perfect circles both have very good rings and great names in the SBC world, but how do they do in the LS1 crowd? and with an intention for serious nitrous use lurking about? im looking for what you guys chose and why?

i've also heard many good things about low tension oil rings for track use. Jud was using this ring in the orange SAM car and picked up a supposed 20HP gain over a regular moly ringset. basically looking for some comprable setups. what do you guys think?

DO NOT RUN GAPLESS rings. I ran them and had oil control issues with the heads (pulled oil down the guides) and several others I've seen had the same issues

I'm right now in the process of changing to diamond pro-select filefit rings in mine.

total seal moly rings here. at 4500 miles i gotta check the oil often ( twice a week ) , ooof , but i hear it gets better ( god i hope so ) with more miles. the builder picked the rings and cam , i would not go with these rings again , or the cam ! 205/212 for a stroker WTF? i know better now.

mine had 8K miles on them and never got any better. You may want to consider junking them rings

I read in another thead ( https://ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.p...=011108#000000 ) that TS recomends a breather restrictor to combat the high vacuum. Might be worth looking into.

I dont like gapless rings, but if they are causing oil to be pulled thru guides there is something to be said for there sealing ability. This doesnt sound like the problem they would cause, i would think they would cause incorrect pressure differential between combustion pressure and crankcase vacuum, and this may lead to flutter and or oil consumption. Any experts on this are welcome to chime in here.

all I know is that my intake was dry so the PCV was NOT the culprit. My intake valves all had a teaspoon of oil and the intake bowl areas were oil soaked

No evidence of oil coming up from the bottom (edges of rings very clean)

MY new MTI 427 LQ4 uses the following:

1. Custom Wiseco 11.25:1 forged aluminum pistons measuring 4.060" diameter &

2. Childs & Albert Plasma Moly piston ring set

These piston rings are not the ones you guys are having oil usage problems with are they?

Also, my motor was built to stay N/A. Are these pistons and rings a good choice for my application?

Thanks,

MTI 427 Roadster

so basically, the Childs & Albert stuff is looking pretty good, but Total seals are total crap i wonder how much diffrent other Plansma moly ring sets hold up VS: the C&A stuff? apparently the diamond stuff is holding up very well also, so we've got a total of two weiners. what else? anyone tried perfect circles? or maybe even z-gaps? thanks for the imput guys!

diamind seems to have the best reputation out there at the moment. i'm pretty well leaning towards them. im glad to see so much good information here ;D LS1 tech rules!

Kevin,

you cant use old style rings in the LS1 ring grooves. Diamond uses the standard LS1 style ring setup. 1.5, 1.5, 3.0mm. SBC's are a little off. ;D

I think its the valve seals. It cant "pull" it through the guide, unless the seal was bad. As LS1derfull stated- If they are really pulling the oil through, then its sealing well!

I am not a mechanic but was told the following by one who has been building small block chevy racing engines for many years, Shirl Dickey. Here is what he has told me recently:

Oil consumption is either a valve seal problem or a ring problem... I have found that it is mandatory to cut the valve guides down when using high lift cam profiles... If the guides have not been cut down, then there is a good chance the valve retainers would hit the seals and damaged them. (end Quote)

Do you guys agree then that on any given motor that is consuming oil, if the oil is not being consumed b/c of the rings, then the oil must being used on the top end b/c of a valve seal problem? THat is what i have been told and led to believe.

THanks for your feedback,
