Default update on blown motor

i took off the water pump and the timing chain cover was craked open and metla shavings andd in it and took off the cover and the 3 bolts that hold the chain to the cam were sheered off and the threads of the bolts are still in the cam and the double roller chain is trashed too.. i cant even get the cam out becuase the bolts are still in there wihout the heads on them and cant grab it and cant take the tranny off the motor becuse it wont spin over .. could a head gasket really cause this or just a poor motor build?? i havent taken it all apart yet but i am monday to carefully inspect the head gaskets and then check them again to see if thats what the prob was and get the heads flow tested to see if they were ported badly and the port was to close the the coolant holes and that what cuase it or what but all i know is since the timing chain was broke off, new rotating assembly cam and prob a new block and heads...

what else could have cause this.. i cant sleep at night not knowing what did all this damage... any info or theries would be great and helpful...

damn...that sucks man. the timing chain bolts sheared off the cam gear? whoa. thats a first. there's gotta be more to it then just the head gasket. like you said, maybe the wall on your head collapsed or something. theres got to be something goin on here besides just a blown chain, those things don't just go bad.

I was thinking the same thing, how in the hell do you break off the cam gear bolts? Thats some serious **** man, The only thing I can think of that would do that is for the crank to want to spin and the cam not too or possibly even vise versa but how in the hell could this happen?

Good luck on the next build man, I know it sucks and is alot of downtime/money before everything is at 100% then.

A cylinder or a few cylinders full of coolant, causeing a major hydralock maybe ......it would account for inability to spin the motor over at this point.

Piston to valve contact will do that.

http://www.akmcables.com/camgear.jpg

I tore my motor down, found nothing wrong but p-to-v (bent valves and eyelets in pistons). My motor ran for ~2 hours after a cam swap before doing that. The cam slid right out after I removed that center section (and I plan to reuse it). I had no head gasket issues - all I did was a cam swap on a motor that had ~15k on it.

Even though I had Crane double valve springs on there, I think I may have floated the valves (I was getting on it when the motor let go).

Pull the heads off and that will let you know what's going on... sounds like a dropped valve or valve seat to me.
