A collapsed lifter means that the plunger has feel to the bottom of the lifter. By rotating the engine untill the lifter has dropped of the ramp and nose of the cam you will be able to tell by seeing if there is any slack in the push rod. If there is then more than likely the plunger is stuck in the bottom of the lifter. Worse case is a roller has came off a lifter.
