2002 LS1 Normal Oil Consumption
Jeff
My '02 z28, a4, 3.23:1 car is using plus or minus 1 quart of oil in 2000 miles. Is this common for an '02 car with the new style rings ? I followed all the typical, probably outdated break in methods that we are all familiar with. It went on mobil 1 at 3000 mi. I feel that this is a little on the high side, should I be concerned ?

You may try switching to a non-synthetic 5W-30 or a heavier synthetic oil. Oil consumption will also reduce as the car breaks in. It took my car bout 15K miles for everything to seat, now it does not use any oil at all.

I'd take it into the dealer for an oil consumption test, but with the bolt ons, heads, cam, and nitrous, I don't think they'd help me out much.

I will try putting it on conventional oil for a while.
I thought only the super sports had the mobil 1 factory fill. This is the way the sales brochure read ??
I noticed a synthetic oil life study on the net. I think Patman is involved with it. The 2002 Z28 test car seems to be using some oil also.

PATMAN:
How come you would not go any thicker than 10W 40 on my 427 LQ4.
THanks

Because once you reach a certain point, thicker is not better, it just flows slower and creates more heat if the engine doesn't need thick oil. Unless your engine has super huge clearances, 50wt oil is not necessary. And even with engines that may need a 50wt oil, you will find that 10w40 Redline will protect better than a 20w50 conventional oil would, while not losing power like a thicker oil would do.
