Default Cometic (MLS) gaskets on 01 and earlier LS1s, is it really a No No

Subject says it all....

I got my heads off and checked my piston deck height, looks like .007 to .008

Was ready to start ordering parts and was hit with the "you cannot use MLS type head gaskets with 01 and earlier LS1s" story....

Looking for experiences and options...

Any help would be appreciated...

If your heads have the notch out of them like hte 01 and earliers they will leak coolant.

edit. I didnt see the Cometic brand in the first post. Have had no experiences with those.

Cometics are not leaking on my 2000. Wasn't it earlier heads (98??) that had the problem?

The mid year '00 and up heads do not have tha cast in slot on the head surface. If you get the slot welded up like I do mine then you canuse what ever gasket ya want.

Does anyone have a picture of this slot? I would like to check my 2000 LS1 heads and my 317 heads. The LS1 block has nothing to do with this, just the heads, correct?

Cometics or Mr Gasket Brand MLS are not the same as GM MLS . No problems with notched heads.

I'm running Mr.Gasket MLS with my notched 98 heads.

i've used both copper & cometic...cometics are the best IMO...AND you dont have to o-ring...they hold LOTS of cylinder pressure...now as for the notch for coolant deal, i'm all ears on this one

I have Cometic .040" mls gaskets on my 1999 C5 w/AFR 205's. No problems, but the AFR's don't have a notch like the earlier heads. If I am not mistaken, I think the 5.3L heads have the notch.
