Just to let you know I had this problem on Jan 1st and the sound is the same as what you decribed. I took the coil packs and valve covers off and found that a Comp Cam spring had broken in half. In turn it dropped a valve into the block. From what I have read it sounds like a problem that was due to poor quality from Comp Cam.

how does the car idle??
I had mine at WOT and right when i let off a felt a noticeable difference in the car. I think i even heard the snap right as i lifted off from my WOT run(lucky i wasnt WOT still)
But the car started to sputter and felt as if it was running on 4cyl. I limped about a mile home and shut thw car down. I ran inside and got atap and checked the car and it had a hellova time starting up. Then under current misfire history I saw what i didnt wanna see. Cyl 4 had like 100misfires which wasnt good! Others had around 0-10max. I pulled the valve cover on that side and didnt see anything bad. Then i tryed to turn the springs and then i saw that #4 had cracked INTO! This was a comp 918 no older than 200miles.

I didnt here any tapping, but the exhaust sounded like it had a peice of paper in it.

I've broken 3 in the last 2 months. Never could hear anything except for the obvious miss. The second one that broke I couldn't even hear a miss. The car surged and threw a engine missfire code and then it smoothed out and ran fine. I knew what it was but I was pissed drove it another 50 miles to get home. Luckily it never did drop the valve.

Cars at one of are sponsors now. They think its coming from the front cover or water pump possibly? they dont think its valve train or bottom end which is a good thing.
