valve train noise

When the spring broke, do you know if the valve came in contact with the piston? If so your problems may very well extend beyond the valvetrain. Can you determine exactly where the ticking is coming from? Whenever i am trying to determine where a tick is coming from i find it helpful to listen through a broom stick or screw driver. It allows you to listen to only a certain area, and it eliminates excess noise.

If it really isn't a valve making the noise than a lifter could definantly be causing it, but it seems like there would be some play with the pushrod for the lifter in question when the lifter was on the cam base circle
oh well its winter time... time for some stuff to put on it.... i have to take the upper half apart anyway... i checked the valve cover and all the rockers are tight and no scrapes. so im thinking its a lifter noise.

Process of elimination my man. Either has to be a valve or lifter. That broken spring probably didn't do you any favors either.
