Anyone who'd purchase a cam w/o knowing its specs has rocks for a brain.

Generally, I'd agree.

However, if you're buying a cam designed by a professional, like LG or the like you can rest assured it'll do pretty much what it's designed for based on the input that he customer wanted out of the cam. I think the Juggernaut proved itself to do what 01-Z wanted, make him quicker down the 1320' holding the rest of his setup the same.

I'd be willing to bet that 95% of the people on this board, myself included, truely lack a fundamental understanding of cam design and how to properly integrate it into a motor. So, to say that someone that buys a custom cam ground for their preferences but doesn't exactly know the specs as having rocks for brains is really not accurate.

Such a statement assumes that most customers have the knowledge base and experience that pro cam designers, tuners etc have and we all know that it's just not the case.

Why do we neede tuners that are pushing their knowledge of cam designs and profiles in these motors if all the customers should essentially be able to do the same?

actually the people that have rocks for brains are the ones that think knowing the specs will make them faster somehow or give them some sort of upper hand... As cannibal said, the majority have no idea what they are for or how to even choose a cam beyond a conversation starter for bragging about what you have... I laugh every time I see someone say "I wont buy an LG cam because he wont tell me the specs"... its their loss in the end. People that DONT have rocks for brains are smart enough to listen to the shops in their recommendations and generally will make the power or the goals they wish to achieve.

Let me put it this way-
2 years ago I wanted to put the baddest cam I could find in my car .
The G5X-2 was just coming out.I remember arguing with Lou that I wouldn't
buy that cam unless i knew the specs.RAGEman just dyno'd 404/385(I think).
Knowing you can't race a dyno,it didn't mean a whole lot.
Then RAGEman went to the track and ran like 11.15@123.
I was sold, called Lou and ordered the cam.
I didn't give a **** what the specs were.
I didn't care what the G5X-3 specs were and I don't care what the Juggernaut cam
specs are.It doesn't make a damn bit of difference if it's a 220 cam or a 260 cam.
I told Lou I only wanted 2 things-
1. It has to make big power.
2.It has to fit under stock heads.
LG did just that.

If I wanted to do heads or a motor, I just call LG and ask what will fit and what won't fit. It's not rocket science.

But you guys can do whatever you want.

The people you refer to in the 10s with the setup you're aiming for use:
  • larger diameter long tubes, usually at LEAST 1 3/4, preferably 1 7/8"
  • no cats
  • Proper suspension setup for racing, Hal shocks, drag springs
  • FAST 90/90
  • very aggressive tunes
  • driver skill
  • excellent track prep
  • other secrets that they have figured out or learned that they're not inclined to share to stay on top of their game
dont forget......
built tranny
driveshaft
drag bar
good air
and a low *** raceweight, 3300 will barely get you 10's w/heads & cam
