Default ok i clayed the P to V

i couldnt wait for the springs to get here so i clayed. put the clay on the piston. put the head back on and snugged it down. turned the engine over two full times. pulled the head off and measured the clay with a depth micrometer. i got 135thousandths on the intake and exhaust.

I'd like to know too, I've used a heavy spring before and it has compressed the lifter some and given a P/V clearance that was MUCH different than when I used a "light" flowbench spring.

The proper way to check it is with an adjustable rocker set to zero Lash.

A standard Hyd. Roller has preload.

suppose that you have 40 thou of preload.

If you use a ballpoint pen spring ( kidding), or flowbench style spring, you get the preload that is supposed to be in the lifter, now in the valve, only multiplied by your rocker ratio. (1.7)

BEcause of this, you are starting with 40 thou * 1.7= ~ 70 thou that the valve is open. So starting with the valve 70 thou open, and you have 60 thou of clearance ( in reality), your motor will not turn over. OR, suppose you have 160 thou of clearance, you will now only have 100 thou.

Make sense?

If you use a hydraulic lifter and a standard spring, you will compress the lifter such that you will have more clearance, untill the lifter pumps up. ITs not much, but it sure puts a snag in the install.

Hope that helps

i used the duals springs that are on the head. so i should wait and try the clay with the lighter spring. seems like an aweful lot of clearance with the fm11 cam and my heads milled .024 for 62cc

I used the light Moroso springs and it worked fine. The other thing you can do is get an old lifter and drill out the center, clean it out and fill it with epoxy or FastSteel. That way it won't collapse, but you have to use clay and for me measuring clay is not as precise as using a dial indicator.

Yes, that or a solid lifter.

We use a hydraulic lifter that has been "gutted" and made solid to check p-v. We also check it with an adjustable rocker set to 0 lash. You can check coil bind very accurately this way too.

Beast nailed it, use a solid lifter or take your hydraulic lifter apart and put shims in it to make it solid. This IS the only way to properly obtain the clearance data.

Thats correct But you must set it up with zero lash.

Like I said before, a solid lifter on a hyd. rocker will preload the valve side of things.
