Question Z06 Cam Upgrade

I am considering the following cams for my 2002 Z06 and need some advice.

TR 224/224 .563/.563 114
TSP 224/224 .581/.581 114
TSP 225/225 .589/.589 114
FMS FM4 226/226 .575/.575 114

TR 224/227 .563/.569 114
FMS FM5 224/228 .588/.576 114

Other upgrades include an intake, long tube 1.75" headers, and an underdrive pulley. I will be keeping my cats.

The application is mostly street driving with the occasional track based roadracing driver's ed event. In other words, I want a cam that has torque everywhere (2000-6600 rpm).

I also want to be able to pass a sniffer test and get reasonable mileage out of a set of springs.

- What cam would be best?
- How many miles would I get on a set of springs?
- What would be the estimated RWHP and RWTQ?

Also, do I have to go with headers to benefit from this cam upgrade?

do u have to...no.
would i....most definitely!!
youre pumping in more air and fuel in now, so u wanna be able to breathe well enough to exhale as fast and as much as u inhale. if nothing else is done on the exhaust, i woulld definitely go with some good headers. not to mention u will pick up some extra hp.

Can the stock Z06 heads flow efficiently up to .589"? If not, what is the max?

If you want torque everywhere, you should look more at a 112LSA and less at the 114LSA. Passing emissions is more of a question of overlap than lobe separation. If valve spring life is a concern, a TR 224/224 112 +0 cam will give you what you're looking for along with longer valve spring life. Don't get any advance ground in your cam though. The intake closing point on the stock LS6 cam is around 44 degrees ABDC (@.050"). The TR 224/224 112LSA (+0) cam also has an intake closing point at 44 degrees ABDC. Power should peak around 6200 rpm. This would be a very nice upgrade from the Z06 cam.

I am looking for very similar results and am doing similar mods but with the addition of a TNT 100 shot. I am considering this cam... any thoughts?

FM-F2-114 FMS Custom Grind Camshaft - 224"/224" .588"/.588" 114LSA - aggressive profile with a 1800-6600 RPM range, good idle

I love the power range of this cam, and the fact that the LSA is not to crazy. This 114 would give me more of a sleeper idle, correct? I will need to change springs with that lift correct? Is there a cam out there that will retain stock springs and still give decent power gains?

Thanks!

If you are not going to spray, and only want one of the cams you posted, I would pick the FM4. If you are going to spray, then the FM5. I imagine most of those cams could get you close to 400rwhp, but the FMS cams are putting out crazy power. I don't know anything about sniffer tests. If I lived in a state like that I would just install the stock cam during inspection time, then switch back afterwards. It would be worth a days work to me.

I'm hoping for more than 400 RWHP since I will be using stock Z06 heads. For example, the MTI Stealth II cam has made 412 RWHP and 390RWTQ with stock '01 Z06 heads. I'm curious what a 224/224 .581/.581 14 cam would have done on that particular car.
