Default Pic of what caused my loud tapping!

This is the culprit! This cam was in my car for 70,000 miles, so it probably wasn't a bad install that did this. Lifters look ok, all rollers spun well. Obviously, I'm replacing everything, but any ideas?

Aftermarket. I didn't know what it was until I took it out. Lunati 216/218 115 LSA. Don't know the lift (farting around with my dial indicator showed me about .488 on the intake), but the cam is about 4 years old. By the way, I didn't show all of the gouges, but they were restricted to the first 8 lobes (the last 8 were ok)!

Sounds like it was only partially heat treated?

I had a couple lobes like that on my stock cam . My lifters were the culprit though . . .

I've got a Comp 216/220 .525/.532 that looks very similar but not as severe. A few of the lobes are near perfect. I tend to believe it wasn't hardened properly. Got to pull the heads and replace the lifters.

Wow - thats for posting the picture. Pretty wild how only one half of the shaft had a problem.
