Default trex cam in a daily driver

i would like to run the trex cam in my 01 camaro and it would be driven on the street everyday. i have a spec 3 clutch and flywheel and am going to upgrade all of the valvetrain (minus heads) when installing the cam. i also plan to run the stock 3.42 gear for awhile til i can afford 3.73 or even 4.10s. would it hurt my car in anyway to run this set up for about a month or two? i have heard that it will be hard to drive because of the lack of low end power how bad will it be affected?

yeah man if you're looking to spin the motor to 7k and up with at least a 4.10 gear then get the trex. i wouldnt suggest anything like this for a daily driver.

Look at TSP 233/233 or 233/239
Futral F13
G5X2 or G5X3

These would all be better choices for a daily driver. unless this car sees the track every weekend and you have the supporting mods you're not gonna like it. What are your goals for times and such at the strip?

Usually for a daily driver, you want to have the widest/flattest torque curve possible. With the t-rex, you will have exactly the opposite. It's a peaky cam that need to be spinned to 7000 rpm to shine and with no torque under 3000 rpm. To compensate for the lack of low end, you have to go with at least 4.10's. If you run a t-rex with the stock 3.42's, your car will be a dog on normal driving. And if you drive your car a lot everyday, be prepared to change your valvesprings twice a year.

IMO, the TR224 would be a better choice. Plenty of torque in the low end and good peak numbers. Easier on the valvesprings also.

Or you could try TSP 233/233, for a little more power

With the right tune you'll be fine. I drive mine back and forth to work and school, I love it! Its not true that the cam is a dog at low rpm, and you will not have any problems daily driving the beast with the stock 3.42, the car would drive fine. Im using 3.42 myself, never had a problem. Another thing, it's not true that you have to switch out your valve springs twice a yr. Buy a good valve spring and be done with it! Take it from the people that have this cam and drive it everyday
Good luck with it if you decide to go with. You want regret it!

You make these comments running a TRex in your built 408cid? The guy above is asking about putting the TRex in his cam only 346cid. There will be a HUGE difference.

There is no way I would put a TRex in my cam only stock displacement LS1 for a daily driver. In my opinion the TR224 is a much better choice for a daily driver.

Good luck.

Yeah, but you have a 408! Big cubes swallow big cams more easilly than stock displacement engines. I have no doubt that you 408 can produce massive torque at low rpm's with a t-rex, but that's another story with a 346. Oh, and I would not say "... be done with it!" talking valvespring life with a cam having .608/.612 of lift.

you're trex is also in a 408. there is a big difference then. put it in a 346 and it would be a completely different story

I don't think 248 degrees of duration is that bad for a driver, but I am not too "normal". My definition of streetable, "does it overheat? No, ok" I would reccomend something along the lines of a torquer for anyone else though. The trex is sort of a pian to tune becuase of the overlap too.

A T-Rex with a M6 is a lot less forgiving than with an A4. You will jerk your universals, rear gears will develop noise, tranny will develop noise unless you go with 4.10 or taller gears. That is why most cam cutters post or list the prefered operating range of the cam i.e. 1700-6600, 2200-6600, T-Rex 3500-6800. Go with a less agressive cam. These things have left me still deciding on which cam I want, but mine is not a daily driver.

i wouldnt suggest that cam in the least bit for a daily driver, it's to big, my g5x3 is on the limit also, i would suggest a 22x/22x duration caam

My friend has a 2002 M6 with Trex and 4.10s as his daily driver. He loves it. He says it's fine for daily driving.

Default 382 Stroker

Hey guys pertaining to the Trex...you think it would be ok in a 382 stroker...i know how yall say that bigger cubes swallow the trex...but in my terms what do yall think...it will be a daily driver as well...but only about 100miles a week..

I think its all a matter of the person. A t-rex is tame enough for me but not 99% of normal people would like it.

I saw a dyno between the trex and tr230. The trex didnt start to pull away until 5500rpms. A smaller cam would probably be more fun on the street unless you always spinning above 5k.

Yeah, that was mine

The TQ was slightly lower than the TR230 below 5K but continued to rise passed it after. It's not like there is no TQ, it's just not as high as some smaller cams. It did quite well in my A4 3.23 geared car, the trick is tuning and with a TQ converter and proper tuning to the A4 itself, it's probably more streetable than an M6 as I had mine pretty dialed in. As far as a DD, I like hellbents10 definition . Seriously, if you can take it, it's fine. For me, it would be a bit annoying but it's no DD either. The TR230 was actually a sweet cam and a decent DD as well. I would look at something a bit more lower RPM friendly though, as your not gonna want to spin your stock bottom end up to what the Trex loves, 7200+!!! I lost my last motor at 6900 for those that think it's fine and is lucky enough to do it all the time...
