Default Cam and Gears question

Well I posted this in the gear section as well, but thought I might get some more help in here. If I shouldn't have put it here, go ahead and delete it and sorry.

************************************************** ****

I used to have a 98 3.8L Firebird, but swapped motors to the LS1. Mostly for the power of course, but now I am starting to look into more things and needed some opinions.

I am planning on getting the new TSP 233/239 cam that is talked about on here real soon. Along with that an LS6 intake, and cutout. Now, I was wondering about the gear that would be best for this cam and setup?

I have an M6 now with Hooker headers, Magnaflow exhaust, Lid, and still running the stock 10 bolt. I drive the car every day and do a little racing on the streets and at the track. Not real big into it ... YET

Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance ..

Do you plan on getting a 12 bolt or 9" in the future? If so i'd be more than content with the stock 3.42's. I'm going to be installing this cam on monday when it arrives and if you give me a week i'll let you know how it pulls with the stockers.

FWIW I took a ride in Matt's 02 hawk (silverhawk02ta) and he has the torquer (just a little less exhaust duration). It's pretty close in specs and he had stock gears. He was untuned and it pulled hard from the moment you snap the throttle. I don't think he lost anything from stock except maybe under 1800 rpm's. If you're getting a rear built i'd still suggest going with 4.10's as this is a 23x duration cam and they like more gear.

Thank you. I do plan on getting a better rear end, just not real soon since they are so expensive. I will not be ordering my cam until the end of the month, so if you could, please let me know what you think of it with the stock 3.42. I would appreciate it.

If you can get a video clip of idle, revs, and some passes too I've only seen/heard one clip of this cam and would like to see more.

Thanks again.

i have an auto with just a 3000 stall, and im looking at this cam with a 3.42 or 3.73 gear.. only gots 3.23's now. anyways prolly not enuff stall, so i hope the 3.73's help me some with it! may upgrade to a 3500 who knows, just dont want to hurt the nitrous times by running to much gear or stall, like i heard you could, seems there are sometimes no right awnsers to these questions!

hey zmc if you're going to run this cam i suggest definitely running no less than a 3200 with a 3500 being perfect.

This cam won't suffer from smaller gear. But it will benefit from a bigger gear.

Dude I'm doing cam swap going with the Torquer or FM13 and if I were you I would stay 3.42 and stick to street tires. Until you get your 12 bolt and then run 4.10's see you on mofbody.com. Good Luck with the install-

PS your going to be doing LS6 Oil pump, Dual Roller Timing Chain correct? Also do Dual springs-just making sure!!

Thanks for the advice. I am thinking that is what I'm going to do and just wait for gear when I get get a better rear end.

Yes, I had planned on new timing chain and dual springs, but did not consider the LS6 Oil Pump. Is this something that should be done or needs to be done ?

Well what year motor do you have if it's 98-00 you need LS6 oil pump if it is 01-02 then you already have it but since you are getting an LS6 Intake then I would think you have 98-00. Plus what type of exhaust system are you running? Just wondering if you have done the EGR and AIR block off stuff? The reason I say all this is because you should think of everything you want done or need done before or right after you do your cam so that when you go to tune it you won't mess up the tune later until your ready to go big again like heads etc.. Good Luck

i agree, but you only need a single timing chain, not double. stick with the 3.42's till you get a 12 bolt/9inch and then go with either a 4.10 or 4.30 gear.

FWIW, I have a TSP 231/237 in my car right now untuned with 3.73's. I used to have a 212/218 cam. The TSP feels waaay more sluggish than the 212 below 2500. I wish I had 4.10's right now.

I wouldn't go any less than 4.10's with the cam you are considering.

It seems that there are a number of guys running stock gears with the Torquer plus he said he doesn't have the money to buy a 12 bolt. So don't you think it would be risky to run different gears? I wouldn't. But maybe it would be ok I'm still debating it my self???

keep the stockers til you get a new rear. the 231/237 uses less aggresive lobes than the torquer or 233/239. the 231/237 uses lunati grind whereas the torquer and 233/239 use a xe-r style lobe but even a tad more extreme. the torquer and 233/237 will feel a lot better on the lowend fwiw.
